Job description

Understood is a nonprofit helping millions of people navigate the realities of neurodivergence. We translate trusted knowledge about ADHD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia into clear guidance, practical tools, and community support — so people don’t just feel informed, they feel understood.

Having a shared commitment to our values is a key factor in any hire we make. We have five core values:

  • Continuously learn.
  • Act with intention.
  • Grow together.

Come be part of an organization with an entrepreneurial spirit that’s working toward a future where people can navigate neurodivergence with clarity, in a world that truly understands them.

To advance our mission and deepen our impact, we're hiring a senior producer, reporting to the director of content development. You're a video-forward podcast producer with demonstrated show-running experience and a strong storytelling instinct. You have a media background and can lead a podcast from pitch to publish — and just as easily produce a polished piece of standalone video content.

You have a detailed understanding of the podcast and video ecosystem, direct experience producing content that's natively distributed for both video and audio, and you know how to use data to shape show direction and grow an audience.

A creative and strategic leader, you're highly organized and comfortable managing multiple projects and team members at once.

You're a self-starter who excels at working both independently and collaboratively. You have a keen eye for detail and hold yourself to a high standard for quality and brand consistency.

This is a hybrid role that requires a minimum of three (3) days a week in our NYC office, with a focus on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

What you'll do
Lead production across multiple shows & productions
  • Serve as the lead producer for video-forward podcasts within the Understood Podcast Network, while also developing and producing standalone, one-off content projects with a particular focus on YouTube.
  • Drive episode production from concept to final delivery for assigned episodes, across audio and video formats.
  • Direct all stages of production, including story development, advanced research, guest booking, scripting, and recording direction.
  • Guide post-production, including edits, revisions, pickups, and final delivery.
Oversee content strategy and quality
  • Apply editorial and visual guidelines consistently across assigned episodes and projects, flagging opportunities to the Director of Content Development.
  • Contribute episode ideas and pitches, and support hosts and talent during recording and production.
  • Enhance overall show quality through strong editorial choices.
  • Repackage and curate content for YouTube, web, social, email, and other platforms.
Apply data to episode-level decisions
  • Use audience data and platform performance to inform decisions on assigned episodes and projects.
  • Identify opportunities to grow audience engagement across audio and video platforms.
  • Develop ideas informed by listener and viewer behavior, especially for YouTube.
Improve processes and champion innovation
  • Identify and flag workflow improvements within assigned production work, and pilot new tools or techniques as directed.
  • Leverage AI tools where appropriate for scripting, editing, insights, and content repackaging.
  • Stay informed on emerging podcast and video production trends and integrate best practices.
Manage and develop producers
  • Provide day-to-day guidance, feedback, and mentorship to other staff and freelance producers.
  • Delegate tasks effectively and support professional growth.
  • Collaborate across teams to ensure smooth workflows and clear communication.

In this role, you bring applied expertise and the ability to own components of a project or workstream end-to-end. You work with cross-functional partners, manage project-level milestones and risk, and contribute to budget planning.

We don't expect a perfect match across every category. What matters is relevant experience, genuine interest in the work, and a mindset for growth.

Leadership and people

  • Experience: 5+ years of combined experience in video-forward editorial production, editing, and content development, including proven experience running or producing a podcast end to end, from pitch to publish.

  • Domain expertise: Demonstrated proficiency in audio and video recording and editing, with deep knowledge of podcast and video formats, styles, and genres — particularly parenting, lifestyle, and narrative storytelling content — and experience producing content for parenting, family, or lifestyle audiences. Experience with Descript, Premiere, or Riverside.
  • Strategic thinking and execution: You own production of assigned episodes and projects end to end, applying editorial and visual guidelines consistently and flagging broader opportunities to the Director of Content Development.
  • Project management: Strong background in content production management with a focus on timely, high-quality delivery, using project management tools to plan and track work across multiple productions.
  • Data and analytics: You use audience and platform data to develop insights and inform decisions on assigned episodes and projects.

Communication, collaboration, and technology fluency

  • Communication: Strong writing and editing skills, with a talent for storytelling that connects with audiences on a personal, human level, and the ability to communicate clearly with teammates, your manager, and cross‑functional partners.
  • AI fluency: Working knowledge of AI tools in content production — from scripting and editing to analytics and audience insights — applied to specific tasks within your work, following company guidelines for responsible use.
  • Collaboration and ways of working: Self‑starter who works effectively both independently and collaboratively, with a keen eye for detail and a high standard for quality and brand consistency — proactively identifying and flagging workflow improvements within your work.
Nice-to-haves
  • Experience exploring and implementing new content formats and production techniques.
  • On‑camera experience — hosting, interviewing, or directing talent on camera.
  • Ability to research and draw insights from quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Basic knowledge of SEO and developing keyword‑targeted content.
  • Familiarity with project management tools such as Jira, Asana, or Airtable.
  • Proficiency in digital audio workstations such as ProTools or Logic.

The base salary range for this role is minimum $115,000–$125,000 maximum, depending on years of experience and qualifications. We offer a comprehensive benefits package that supports wellness for our team members and their families. You can learn more about our benefits and offerings .
