About the Role

Our client, a prominent chemical manufacturing company, is seeking a dedicated Senior Process Safety Engineer to enhance safety protocols and risk management at their facility in Welkom, Free State . This role is crucial for ensuring the highest standards of process safety are maintained across all operations, minimizing risks of incidents and ensuring compliance with stringent regulatory requirements. The Senior Process Safety Engineer will lead hazard identification and risk assessment activities, develop and implement safety management systems, and foster a strong safety culture throughout the organization. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in process safety methodologies, risk analysis techniques, and a deep understanding of chemical processing operations. This is an excellent opportunity to take a leadership role in safety assurance within a key industrial hub. The role operates on a hybrid model, combining essential on-site engagement with strategic off-site planning and analysis.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and conduct Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) such as HAZOP, What-If, and FMEA studies.
• Develop, implement, and maintain Process Safety Management (PSM) systems and programs in accordance with industry best practices and regulatory standards.
• Oversee incident investigations, root cause analysis (RCA), and the implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
• Ensure compliance with relevant safety regulations, including COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) principles if applicable.
• Develop and deliver process safety training programs for engineers, operators, and management.
• Review engineering designs, P&IDs, and operating procedures for process safety implications.
• Manage and maintain safety-critical equipment (SCE) integrity programs, including mechanical integrity and layer of protection analysis (LOP).
• Foster a proactive safety culture by engaging with all levels of the organization.
• Stay current with advancements in process safety technology, methodologies, and regulatory changes.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• A minimum of 8 years of experience in process safety engineering within the chemical, petrochemical, or a similar high-hazard industry.
• In-depth knowledge and practical experience with PHA methodologies (HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA).
• Strong understanding of PSM elements and relevant international standards (e.g., OSHA PSM, EPA RMP).
• Experience with Safety Integrity Level (SIL) assessments and determination.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Strong communication, influencing, and leadership skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a hybrid model, balancing remote strategic work with on-site operational support in Welkom .
• Relevant professional certifications (e.g., CSP, CCPSC) are a strong advantage.
