Job summary

Merck & Co. in Rahway, New Jersey seeks a Senior Specialist to advance drug substances through characterization of late-stage syntheses, including kilo-lab scale up for APIs and route scouting.

You will synthesize starting materials and intermediates, perform DoE, fate and purge studies, and prepare chemical markers in a lab-driven environment. The role requires strong organic synthesis background, proficiency with HPLC, MS, NMR, and excellent documentation.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Chemistry or MS with 6 years pharma/biopharma experience or BS with 9 years pharma/biopharma experience.
• Significant experience in organic synthesis, including synthetic methodology, catalysis, or total synthesis.
• Strong communication and ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

• Characterize late-stage syntheses to support commercialization of small molecule manufacturing using DoE, fate and purge studies, and chemical marker prep.
• Perform lab work with diverse chemicals using modern equipment, ensuring safe, compliant, and well-documented practices.
• Synthesize starting materials and intermediates for route scouting and kilo lab scale up of intermediates and APIs.
• Plan experiments, analyze data, and write clear development reports.
