Job summary

The Marion County Public Defender Agency seeks an experienced attorney to provide effective representation for indigent clients in problem solving courts, probate, civil matters, and appeals. The attorney exercises independent judgment when policies are unavailable and reports to the Division Chief.

Responsibilities include reviewing cases, interviewing witnesses, negotiating dispositions, maintaining client confidentiality, and collaborating with social workers.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate and license to practice law; 2 years of litigation in Problem Solving Division or 2 years of criminal litigation with lead/co-counsel on 2 felonies.
• Strong verbal, written, communication and presentation skills; top-level interpersonal and facilitation abilities.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and comply with Indiana standards for appointed attorneys.

Responsibilities

• Appears in court to represent indigent clients in problem solving courts and related civil actions.
• Conducts legal/factual review, evaluates evidence, handles pretrial practice, and defends depositions.
• Interviews clients and witnesses; consults experts as needed to effectively represent the client.
• Negotiates case dispositions, including plea agreements, with opposing counsel.
• Keeps clients and families updated on case progress; maintains confidentiality at all times.
• Delegates tasks to staff and collaborates with social workers on multi-disciplinary strategies.
• Ensures compliance with agency policies and legal standards.
