Position: Senior Privacy Specialist

The Senior Privacy Specialist plays a multifaceted role within the organization, monitoring VCUHS/VCU compliance with regulations governing the use, storage, and transmission of Patient Health Information. Responsibilities include monitoring and auditing, policy creation, staff education, and implementing technological safeguards.

This role provides guidance, education, and serves as a resource to the VCUHS/VCU workforce, including researchers, volunteers, and students, on patient privacy, information security, and HIPAA compliance.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements:
  • Certified in Healthcare Privacy Compliance (CHPC), or
  • Certified in Healthcare Privacy & Security (CHPS), or
  • Obtain certification within one year of employment into the position.
Continued Employment Requirements:
  • Current CHPC or CHPS, or
  • Obtain certification within one year of employment in the position.
Experience:
  • Minimum of five (5) years of HIPAA Privacy and Security healthcare experience.
  • Previous experience in an information technology, audit, policy, and/or business-related position.
Preferred Experience:
  • Three (3) years of experience in a compliance environment or academic healthcare center, including HIPAA Privacy and Security work.
Education:
  • Required: Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Business, Healthcare Administration, or related field.
  • Preferred: Master's Degree in the same fields.
Additional Requirements:
  • Ability to research, analyze, and develop plans based on government regulations.
  • Ability to prioritize and adapt to changing tasks.
  • Ability to anticipate the needs of the Compliance Leadership Team.
  • Excellent communication skills at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to work from an annual work plan and manage resources efficiently.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • Prolonged sitting, walking, lifting less than 20 lbs.
  • Strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, clear speech, legible writing, reading, logical thinking.
  • Ability to handle a fast-paced environment, multiple priorities, customer interactions, and frequent changes.
