Overview

The mission of the AI Frontiers lab is to expand the Pareto frontier of Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities, efficiency, and safety through innovations in foundation models and learning agent platforms. Projects include work on Small Language Models (e.g., Phi, Orca) and agentic AI systems (e.g., AutoGen, MagenticOne, OmniParser).

Microsoft Research (MSR) AI Frontiers lab is seeking applications for a Senior Principal Researcher – Generative AI to join our team in Redmond, WA or New York City, NY. The role involves leading efforts on the advancement of Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs). You will play a key role in developing, improving, and exploring Generative AI models, impacting cutting-edge technology development and real-world applications.

Research areas include:

• Reasoning and inference-time compute strategies
• Action models for automating web and computer tasks
• Learning and memory for agentic AI systems to enable evolution and adaptation
• Orchestration and multi-agent systems with human feedback and oversight
• Evaluation and understanding of model and agent capabilities

Minimum Requirements:

• Research demonstrated by publications at conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, NAACL, CVPR, COLT, ECCV, ICCV, EMNLP.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Doctorate in Computer Science or relevant field AND 8+ years of research experience, or equivalent.
• Experience publishing as a lead author or key contributor in AI.
• Participation in top conferences in relevant research domains.
• Ability to define ambitious, original research agendas.
• Effective collaboration, communication, and leadership skills.
• Keen interest in real-world applications and impact.
