Senior Principal Engineer – Antenna Design Engineer

Job Description

This engineering position will report to the manager of RF Solutions, primarily supporting the Tactical Solutions business unit of BAE Systems SMS, with a focus on Radio Frequency (RF) engineering, including the design and testing of RF antennas, systems, and components.

The Engineering, Science and Analysis (ESA) Strategic Capabilities Unit comprises technical talent and organizational leadership to deliver high-impact technologies for our customers’ missions. Our teams are committed to innovation, integrity, continual learning, and strong execution.

What You’ll Do

• Design and realize antennas, phased array antennas, RF circuits, passive RF components, and RF systems.
• Use electromagnetic analysis software to design various antennas (spiral, sinuous, Vivaldi, patch, slot, horn, etc.) and apertures.
• Design frequency-selective surfaces (FSSs) for radiating apertures.
• Implement design techniques for RCS mitigation as needed.
• Collaborate with engineers and technicians to realize RF designs.
• Test RF hardware for performance metrics: VSWR, insertion loss, gain, polarization, RCS, etc.
• Evaluate antenna requirements, conduct concept trade-offs, and develop technical proposals.
• Investigate new technologies for radiating apertures, antennas, and RF systems.
• Mentor junior engineers and technicians in design, build, and test phases.
• Provide technical solutions for applications like electronic warfare, communication, geolocation, etc.
• Interface with customers and other organizations, representing the organization in technical issues.
• Contribute to proposals and new business opportunities.
• Prepare and deliver presentations.
• Maintain a regular work schedule and establish effective working relationships.
• Perform other duties as necessary.

Work Environment

This position requires regular in-person work at the primary location, with possible travel between sites.

Working Conditions

• Work may be performed in office, lab, production, or outdoor environments.
• Occasional work in production areas with protective gear.

Qualifications

• BS degree or higher in Engineering or related field, with 8+ years of experience (higher degrees may substitute for experience).
• Active Secret security clearance.
• Core RF engineering and antenna theory skills.
• Strong communication skills.
• Experience with antenna and RF component design and testing.
• Proficiency with software tools like AWR Microwave Office, CST, HFSS, SENTRI, etc.
• Experience with RF testing equipment and data analysis in MATLAB and Python.

Preferred Skills

• Familiarity with military and tactical communication systems.

Additional Information

Salary range: $130,355 - $221,603. Benefits include health, dental, vision, 401(k), and more. This position is posted for at least 5 days and remains active until filled.
