Job description

This role is located onsite in our Boulder design facility.

About Emporia
Emporia is accelerating the energy transition by helping small commercial and residential consumers save up to 50% on their utility bills. We combine automated energy management tools, real-time 24/7 energy monitoring with utility rate schedules and wholesale energy prices to give our customers true insight into how they are using and spending money on energy. Our Smart Outlets, EV chargers, home batteries, and cloud integrations to third-party smart home devices, thermostats, and smart appliances allow us to reduce pollution, shift usage to less expensive times, and save our customers money.

Our Mission
We help people use energy smarter, save money, and improve the world—guided by four pillars:

  • Customer Satisfaction: We listen to our customers and build products that elevate their lives.
  • Optimization: We refine processes to offer the highest-quality products at the best value.
  • Innovation: We continuously evolve through technology, ingenuity, and common sense.
  • Making the World Better: We develop home electrification solutions that solve real problems and improve lives.

Role Overview
At Emporia Energy, hardware products are the tip of the spear - attracting customers, fueling data analytics, and enabling demand response through integration with Emporia’s energy management platform. We provide our customers with reliable, high-value products at industry-leading prices.

We are looking for a passionate Senior Power Electronics Engineer to help expand the Emporia Energy hardware ecosystem – initially by working on our upcoming Bidirectional EV Charger. The role involves owning control loop design and verification for AC/DC and DC/DC power converters and contributing to V2G, G2V, and V2H hardware and control designs. As a senior member of the Hardware Development team, the candidate will work closely with peers on this cross-disciplinary project, providing mentorship to mid and junior engineers, and demonstrating strong analysis, design, and testing skills to produce reliable, low-cost hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary technical expert for bidirectional 10 kW+ level AC/DC and DC/DC power electronics hardware and control systems at all design and validation stages.
  • Provide power electronics hardware expertise to lower-level engineers, especially for a bidirectional dual-active bridge architecture.
  • Support other power-related projects as needed.
  • Understand control loop design and operation for bidirectional power converters.
  • Collaborate with controls and firmware teams to mature and transition designs into production.
  • Work with mechanical, manufacturing, and electrical engineers as needed.
  • Support transition from development to high-volume manufacturing.
  • Assist in developing production line testing for developed systems.
  • Participate in design reviews, testing, and debugging, fostering collaboration within the small team.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • BSc in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in power electronics development for commercial products.
  • Experience with digital control systems for grid-tied inverters, rectifiers, and DC/DC converters using microcontroller platforms.
  • Hardware development experience including topology selection, switching devices, magnetics, and sensing networks.
  • Understanding of simulation-aided control loop analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of power converter theory and design.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python and C.
  • Familiarity with electrical hardware lab equipment.
  • Experience managing workload and project timelines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Desired Qualifications & Skills

  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Knowledge of V2G and G2V regulations in North America related to grid-interactive power converters.
  • Bidirectional inverter design experience for North American grid applications.
  • Understanding of renewable energy concepts, including home energy storage, power conversion, and fault protection.
  • Experience programming embedded software for STM32 microcontrollers.
  • Experience with electrical and safety compliance standards (FCC, CE, UL/ETL).
  • Experience in designing and shipping high-volume consumer products.

What We Offer
Compensation: $140k-180k + Options
Career Growth: Join a fast-growing company leading in home energy innovation.
Benefits: Medical/dental/vision insurance, 401(k), employee stock options, paid holidays, unlimited PTO, discounts on products and partner offerings.
