Advanced Energy United seeks a highly energetic Senior Policy Principal to lead state-level legislative and political engagement in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. You will build relationships with decision-makers, manage policy strategy, and drive outcomes accelerating the energy transition.

Remote role with strong emphasis on collaboration with member companies, coalition partners, and regulatory staff.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Political Science, Public Policy, Engineering, or Communications; Master’s degree is a plus.
• At least five years in legislative policy development, campaigns, or energy-sector organizing.
• Interest in energy and transportation policy and advocacy.
• Willingness to travel up to 20%.

Responsibilities

• Lead policy work in MA, CT and RI and implement strategies to accelerate clean energy and electrified transport.
• Collaborate with member companies to develop policy positions and reach consensus.

Position Description

Advanced Energy United is currently seeking a highly energetic, smart, self-starting Senior Policy Principal with a background in legislative work and/or issue advocacy to lead United’s state-level legislative and political engagement in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. The Senior Principal will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with legislative and administrative decision-makers, managing and executing on United’s policy advocacy strategy, and working collaboratively with other United team members to win policy outcomes that accelerate the energy transition and expand markets for the advanced energy industry. New England states have passed some of the nation’s most ambitious clean energy goals and are home to tremendous clean energy resources, but there is much work to be done to make those clean energy goals a reality. Our current policy priorities include advancing transmission solutions needed to support deployment of large-scale clean energy resources; ensuring our electric grid is strengthened to support electric vehicles and building electrification; and maximizing the use of distributed energy resources.

Key Skills for Success

A Mind for Policy: Market opportunities for the advanced energy industry are driven by policy. The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of legislative and regulatory processes, and experience with energy policy specifically is a plus.

Small “p” Political Awareness: Recognizing opportunity, understanding power dynamics and building coalitions to seize policy opportunities are keys to success for winning victories on our issues. The ideal candidate doesn’t need to have a background in politics but does need to be familiar with political processes and be excited about engaging in the political side of policy-making.

Project Management Skills & A Drive to Get Things Done: The ideal candidate will be able to coordinate and drive team efforts from start to finish, keeping organized and navigating relationships with partners in multiple arenas.

Responsibilities

• Lead Advanced Energy United’s work in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island, working collaboratively with United policy team members on developing and implementing strategies to accelerate the transition to 100% clean energy and electrified transportation, and meet short- and long-term policy objectives as part of United's policy portfolio. These could be legislative, administrative, or regulatory, or a mix of all three.
• Work with Advanced Energy United member companies to develop policy positions and reach consensus on policy positions on key issues.
• Manage lobbyist relationships on the ground and their engagement in legislative strategy and execution.
• Organize member engagement opportunities through direct decision-maker engagement including lobby days, legislator and candidate education, earned media, and participation in legislative, regulatory, and administrative processes, as needed.
• Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with coalition partners, allies, and key legislative and administrative staff. Engage in coordination and advocacy efforts with coalition allies in support of clean energy goals.
• Create reports, presentations, fact sheets, and other written and visual materials needed for education and advocacy efforts and deliver verbal presentations as necessary.
• Work with our communications team to identify opportunities for Advanced Energy United to seek earned media coverage. Draft press statements, do media interviews, write blog posts, participate in webinars, and create opportunities to showcase advanced energy.
• Travel on an as needed basis (up to 3 20%) within Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island and occasionally elsewhere, for advocacy days, meetings with key allies and stakeholders, communications outreach, and other efforts on behalf of Advanced Energy United.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (Economics, Political Science, Public Policy, Engineering, or Communications focus preferred) or applicable comparable experience; Master’s degree is a plus.
• Minimum of five years of professional experience in legislative policy development, campaign work, or organizing in the energy sector; working with business leaders is a plus. A strong preference will be given to candidates with relevant experience in New York.
• Interest in energy and transportation issues and an understanding of the importance of policy advocacy to advance an organizational agenda.
• Entrepreneurial approach, flexible attitude, and ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience in professional settings leading team efforts toward an agreed upon goal, and being responsible for delivering quality finished products.
• Excellent interpersonal relationship-building and communications skills, both written and verbal.
• Must be willing to travel (up to 20%).
