Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced individual to serve as a Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of the Commissioner. This executive role will focus on centering equity in all policy plans and strategies within the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and catalyzing their impact across New York City. The Senior Policy Advisor will report directly to the First Deputy Commissioner and collaborate with agency leaders including the Deputy Commissioner of External Affairs, the Chief Equity Officer, the Chief Medical Officer, and the General Counsel. Responsibilities include supporting cross-agency collaboration, serving as a senior leader in federal responses, translating research with an equity lens, and advising the Commissioner of Health.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advise the Commissioner of Health and oversee priority policy efforts
  • Analyze and translate federal policies for local impact
  • Ensure equity is integrated into all program and policy decisions
  • Coordinate with External Affairs and General Counsel for aligned policy responses
  • Translate legal and policy concepts for public and internal audiences
  • Address policy misinformation through communication strategies
  • Support project management for high-priority initiatives
  • Develop research briefs, memos, and high-quality written products
  • Apply expertise in racial equity, social justice, LGBTQ issues, and civil rights to initiatives
  • Develop policy strategies aligned with the Commissioner’s priorities
Preferred Skills
  • Education or experience in public health or civil rights law
  • Experience working with high-level leaders and decision-making structures
  • Strong project management and operationalization of equity
  • Proven policy and strategy experience, preferably in public health or federal government
  • Knowledge of public health issues, policies, and programs
  • Experience building strategic partnerships and working with diverse stakeholders
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Commitment to ongoing learning, anti-racism, social justice, and equity
  • Self-awareness, humility, and diplomacy
