Senior Policy Advisory for Education

Location: New York, NY or Albany, NY

Job Description:

As a member of the Executive Chamber, the Senior Policy Advisor serves under the direction of the Deputy Secretary for Education, advising and helping oversee all phases of government operations and policy management within the education portfolio. The Senior Policy Advisor will support the Deputy Secretary and Assistant Secretaries for Education in driving the Governor’s education agenda across New York State. The education portfolio includes but is not limited to, support and oversight of the various state agencies focused on education (State University of New York (SUNY), City University of New York (CUNY), New York State Education Department (SED), Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC), and others (“education agencies”) and other key stakeholders.

Duties:

  • Provide strategic and operational support to the Deputy Secretary and Assistant Secretaries for Education in managing a broad and complex policy portfolio.
  • Prepare briefings, lead internal coordination, and facilitate meetings to track progress and support decision-making on key education priorities.
  • Coordinate long-term, cross-agency education policy projects, ensuring alignment and execution across multiple state entities.
  • Draft and review policy proposals, memoranda, correspondence, and briefing materials; offer well-reasoned policy recommendations and strategic guidance.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Governor’s Office and senior leadership at education-related state agencies and community partners, ensuring efficient communication and resolution of policy and operational matters.
  • Engage with non-governmental partners, including advocacy organizations, research institutions, and community stakeholders, to inform and strengthen education initiatives.
  • Review and advise on invitations, events, and public engagements involving the Governor and education stakeholders.
  • Conduct research and analyze emerging education policy trends and best practices to inform state policy development.
  • Travel regularly between New York City, Albany, and other locations throughout the state, as needed.
  • Perform related duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's Degree and at least five years of relevant work experience with a focus on public administration, public policy, education law and policy, and related topics.
  • Demonstrated experience in public policy, education, or government administration, with an understanding of New York State’s education landscape.
  • Exceptional communication, writing, and organizational skills, with the ability to distill complex issues into actionable insights.
  • Proven track record of project managing high-stakes projects and facilitating cross-sector and cross-agency collaboration.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment and manage multiple priorities with a high degree of professionalism.
  • Commitment to public service and education
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
