Job description

Role Description

We’re hiring a dynamic, strategic advocate to push for action across Congress and the broader U.S. government on the extinction risk posed by superintelligence. This role, one of our first hires in the United States, will report to our United States Director and is central to growing ControlAI’s domestic campaign to prohibit superintelligence.

At its heart this position is about building a broad, bipartisan base of support, focusing on direct advocacy with Republican members of Congress and the national security community. Typical days involve emailing legislative staff, supporting senior leaders, holding meetings, and refining briefing materials. Successful candidates thrive in a fast‑paced, mission‑driven environment and demonstrate exceptional persistence in the face of repeated outreach challenges.

Early‑career and experienced candidates are welcome. For more experienced candidates, a Senior Policy Advisor title and higher compensation may be offered. We may hire more than one Policy Advisor if we have several exceptional candidates.

Key Responsibilities
  • Campaign‑style execution: Lead outreach to congressional offices, craft targeted messages, and relentlessly follow up to secure meetings with members. Track and report progress toward goals and deliverables.
  • Policy advocacy: Meet and brief congressional staff, members, and civil servants on AI risks and solutions, translating extinction risk into clear, actionable messaging.
  • Relationship building: Cultivate relationships with stakeholders across the U.S. government, prioritizing Republican members and the national security community.
  • Refining communications and materials: Test and iterate ControlAI’s messaging, optimizing content based on feedback and results.
Qualifications
  • Excellence‑driven: Goal‑oriented, comfortable with ambiguity, and energized by ownership; deliver high‑quality work with autonomy.
  • Relentless persistence: Urgent and proactive; never accept “no” as the final answer.
  • Skilled communicator: Exceptional interpersonal skills, able to craft compelling narratives and simplify complex ideas for policymakers.
  • Constant learning and improvement: Self‑reflective and continually improving effectiveness over time.
  • Honesty and courage: Integrity‑driven; openly discuss extinction risk and share the truth with policymakers.
  • Bipartisan credibility: Credible across political spectrums, especially with Republican and conservative stakeholders.
  • Deep mission passion: Dedicated to preventing the extinction risk posed by superintelligence.
  • We are not looking for technical AI safety experience. Mission‑aligned individuals can learn the technical aspects quickly.
  • Military or national‑security experience is a strong plus.
Salary and Title

Compensation ranges from $90,000 to $160,000 per year, dependent on qualifications. Most candidates will start near the lower to midpoint range. Exceptional candidates may receive a Senior Policy Advisor title with a higher salary.

Other Details

Location: Washington, D.C. In‑person role; relocation assistance may be available for exceptional candidates; occasional domestic and international travel required. No visa sponsorship.

Hours: Full‑time.
