Job summary

City of Atlantic City in New Jersey is seeking a planning assistant to support field and office tasks in preparing surveys, collecting and compiling data, and transposing statistics into visual formats. Job description

Under direction performs the more difficult subprofessional field and office planning work involved in preparing and making planning surveys, collecting and compiling data, and assisting in transposing statistical data into visual form; does related work as required.

Assists in performing the more difficult subprofessional tasks involved in preparing graphic and written presentations of solutions developed for particular planning problems. Assists in performing the more difficult subprofessional tasks involved in transposing statistical data into form suitable for the preparation of maps and charts. Assists in performing the more difficult subprofessional tasks involved in informing subdividers on procedures and review of subdivision plans, informing applicants for zoning variances, compiling data for land acquisition costs, collecting data for zoning maps, collecting information on land use, calculating acreage for open land surveys, and making studies of public facilities. Keeps essential records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
  • One (1) year of experience in performing field and office tasks involved in preparing and conducting planning surveys, collecting and compiling data, and transposing statistical data into visual form.
  • Satisfactory completion of thirty (30) semester hour credits in planning course work at an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience.
LICENSE:
  • Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used in planning work and of methods used in making arithmetic calculations Knowledge of the fundamentals of algebra, plane geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Ability to understand, remember, and carry out written and oral directions.
  • Ability to learn quickly from written and oral explanations and from demonstrations.
  • Ability to organize assigned field and office work
  • Ability to follow established work methods.
  • Ability to keep essential records and files.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
