Job summary

Washington State Department of Commerce is seeking a Senior Planner to support the Growth Management Services unit. The role focuses on technical assistance to local jurisdictions, plan review, and administration of planning grants and contracts.

Candidates should have a strong grounding in GMA, urban planning education, and experience in local government settings. Regular Western Washington travel and remote work options may apply.

Qualifications

• Seven (7) years of combined experience and/or education in local/regional government planning.
• Education involves urban and regional planning or related field.
• Experience with Washington State planning and plan implementation procedures is preferred.
• American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification is preferred or achievable within two years.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical assistance to counties and cities in Washington State on Growth Management Act (GMA) topics.
• Lead for technical specialty areas and draft analyses and testimony as needed.
• Manage grants, loans, and contracts related to planning projects.
• Support plan review and backlogs by reviewing comprehensive plans and development regulations.
