Job summary

Monroe County seeks a Principal Planner in Marathon, FL to provide planning services, review development permits, and prepare staff reports ensuring alignment with the Comprehensive Plan and regulations. The role includes building permit review, GIS updates, public hearings, and cross‑functional support to the Development Review section.

Requires a master’s in urban planning (or related field) with 5 years (or a bachelor’s with 7 years) of related experience; AICP preferred.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Urban Planning or related field with five years of related work experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning or related field with seven years of related work experience.
  • Equivalent number of years of experience may substitute for formal education requirements.
  • AICP certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews proposed development projects to ensure consistency with the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Regulations.
  • Prepares staff reports, analyses, and recommendations for the Director, Planning Commission, and Board.
  • Analyzes planning applications and building permits for completeness and correct procedure.
  • Prepares maps, background materials, and presentations for public hearings and workshops.
  • Leads and facilitates public workshops and provides technical assistance to community projects.
