Job summary

The City of Newberry seeks an experienced Senior Planner to guide growth through development review, long-range planning, policy implementation, and strategic initiatives that will shape Newberry’s future and preserve the small-town character as growth accelerates.

You will collaborate with residents, developers, City leadership, and fellow departments to advance responsible development and ensure compliance with the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Regulations while delivering excellent

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban or Regional Planning, Public Administration, or related field.
  • Four to five years of progressive professional planning experience.
  • AICP certification, or the ability to obtain certification within a reasonable timeframe.

Responsibilities

  • Manage complex planning projects and development applications that support responsible community growth.
  • Review rezonings, site plans, subdivisions, variances, special exceptions, and other land development proposals for compliance with City regulations.
  • Prepare staff reports, presentations, ordinances, resolutions, and recommendations for advisory boards and the City Commission.
  • Conduct research and analysis to support long-range planning, policy development, and updates to the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Regulations.
  • Collaborate with City departments, developers, consultants, elected officials, regulatory agencies, and the public to advance planning initiatives.
  • Serve as a technical planning resource by providing guidance, exercising sound professional judgment, and promoting exceptional customer service.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Urban or Regional Planning, Public Administration, or closely related field
Master’s degree in Planning or a related field

Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban or Regional Planning, Public Administration, or closely related field.
  • Four (4) to five (5) years of progressively responsible professional planning experience
  • A comparable amount of training, education, or experience may be considered.
Preferred
  • Master’s degree in Planning or a related field
  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification, or the ability to obtain certification within a reasonable timeframe

Physical Requirements And Work Environment

This position is primarily performed in an office environment with occasional field work, development site visits, and attendance at evening meetings, workshops, and public hearings as needed.

The Successful Candidate Must Be Able To
  • Frequently sit, stand, walk, bend, and use standard office equipment.
  • Occasionally walk on uneven terrain while conducting development site visits and field investigations.
  • Occasionally lift and carry plans, files, or other materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions during occasional field work and site visits.
  • Attend evening meetings and public hearings as required.
