SPECIAL SALARY INFORMATION:
All person appointed to the position of Senior Physician (Item No. 5456) who have obtained certification by the appropriated American Medical Specialty Board in the specialty to which he/she is assigned, shall receive an additional compensation of a flat-rate monthly bonus equal to 5.5 percent of the step on the appropriate E Schedule to which they are entitled based upon experience. Such bonus shall only be given for certification in one specialty.

DEFINITION:
Incumbents in these positions are licensed physicians that have immediate charge of a small medical section within a larger medical unit of a medical facility or a small program of a medical facility.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
Positions allocable to this classification report to a Chief Physician and have full technical and supervisory responsibility for a small program or a unit within a larger program. These positions work independently under general supervision and have administrative responsibilities including budget preparation, control for the program or unit, and development and execution of policies for the particular unit or program. The position incumbent is responsible for the supervision and coordination of professional staff development and in-service training programs and for the preparation, review, and approval of medical and technical diagnoses, decisions, records, and reports.
  1. Performs administrative duties such as preparing budgets for the section, determining equipment and supply needs, addressing personnel-related issues, developing and revising work procedures for expediting workload or improving levels of service, and screening work.
  2. Formulates policies and plans and directs the programs and medical work of the section or assists in such activities for a division of a medical department.
  3. Examines, diagnoses, and prescribes treatment for patients and reviews the care prescribed by staff physicians, resident physicians, and interns.
  4. Participates in the training of interns and resident physicians.
  5. Coordinates the work of the section with that of other medical and paramedical services.
  6. Confers with consultants regarding care of patients and medical and diagnostic work performed, and coordinates the work of consulting physicians with the work of the section.
  7. Supervises the maintenance of records and the compilation and preparation of reports.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
OPTION I: If assigned to a specialty: Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board in one or more designated specialties or equivalent training -AND- One year of experience in medical practice, post graduate training, teaching or investigative work.

OPTION II: If not assigned to a specialty: One year of experience in medical practice, post-graduate training, teaching or investigative work.

LICENSE:
California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California.
The required license and/or certificate MUST be current and unrestricted; conditional, provisional, probationary or restricted licenses and/or certificates will NOT be accepted.

PHYSICAL CLASS:
Physical Class III – Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
Applicants that qualify under OPTION I must attach a copy of the certificate issued by the American Specialty Board to the application at the time of filing or within 15 calendar days of application submission to hrexams@ph.lacounty.gov.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Credit will be given for experience beyond the Minimum Requirements:
  • Experience in medical practice, post-graduate training, teaching or investigative work beyond the Minimum Requirements.
EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience based upon the application information, desirable qualifications, and supplemental questionnaire at the time of filing, weighted 100%.

Candidates must meet the Minimum Requirements and must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be added on the Eligible Register.
Passing this examination and being added to the Eligible Register does not guarantee an offer of employment.
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
The names of candidates will be added to the Eligible Register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.
NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
VACANCY INFORMATION:
The Eligible Register resulting from this examination will be used to fill vacancies in the Department of Public Health as they occur.
AVAILABLE SHIFT: Any, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
