Job summary

Analog Devices in the United States is seeking a hands-on Photonics Engineer to lead lab bring-up and characterization of photonic demonstrator platforms. You will develop and execute optical, electrical, thermal and system-level tests, perform complex measurements, and ensure results meet interconnect requirements.

You will own the Wilmington photonics lab operations, calibrate equipment, and develop Python-based automation. Collaboration with university partners and foundries is expected.

Qualifications

  • PhD with hands-on optical characterization experience.
  • Strong integrated photonics knowledge and optical comms exp.
  • Ability to independently bring up lab hardware and measurement systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead photonics system bring-up and characterization activities.
  • Develop and execute optical, electrical, thermal and system tests.
  • Perform measurements: optical spectrum, high-speed modulation, BER, tuning.
  • Own day-to-day Wilmington photonics lab operations and equipment.
  • Create Python automation and repeatable characterization workflows.
  • Collaborate with photonic IC designers, high-speed electronics, packaging, and partners.

Our Wilmington photonics lab is now operational and supporting multiple demonstrator programs spanning silicon photonics, microring modulators, and next-generation optical interconnect technologies.We are looking for a hands-on engineer who enjoys building systems, solving difficult measurement challenges, and working at the intersection of photonics, electronics, packaging, and control.Key ResponsibilitiesPhotonics System Bring-Up & CharacterizationLead characterization of photonic demonstrator platforms.Develop and execute optical, electrical, thermal, and system-level test plans.Perform measurements including:Optical spectrum analysisHigh-speed modulation testingBER characterizationThermal tuning and resonance characterizationOptoelectronic Control-loop validationEye diagram and signal integrity analysisDie and wafer level measurementsCorrelate laboratory results to system-level optical interconnect requirements.Laboratory OwnershipOwn day-to-day operation of the Wilmington photonics laboratory.Specify, commission, maintain , and calibrate laboratory equipment.Develop laboratory procedures and characterization methodologies.Support future lab capability expansion and equipment procurement.Automation & Data AnalysisDevelop Python-based automation frameworks.Create repeatable characterization workflows.Analyze large measurement datasets.Generate technical reports and engineering recommendations.Cross-Functional CollaborationWork closely with:Photonic IC designersHigh-speed electronics teamsPackaging engineersUniversity collaboratorsFoundry and OSAT partnersCurrently ADI collaborates with Universities , institutes, and multiple photonic technology suppliers.Required QualificationsPhD in:PhotonicsOpticsElectrical EngineeringApplied PhysicsRelated technical disciplineHands-on experience with optical characterization.Strong understanding of integrated photonics.Experience with optical communication systems.Proficiency in Python for automation and data analysis .Demonstrated ability to independently bring up laboratory hardware and measurement systems.Preferred QualificationsSilicon photonics experience .Microring resonator characterization.TFLN device experience.High-speed optical communications.PIC packaging and fiber alignment experience.Co-packaged optics (CPO) or datacenter optical interconnect experience.Experience working with photonic foundries and academic collaborators.Why This Role MattersThe successful candidate will play a central role in helping ADI establish internal photonics expertise and validate future optical connectivity architectures.
