Job description

The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care is seeking a full-time Senior Pharmacy Technician to join our Ambulatory Care Team to work in our Pomerantz Family Pavilion Pharmacy. Provides specialized support to the Ambulatory Care Pharmacies, which requires one on one contact with patients in their hospital room, discretionary patient room entry and collaboration with hospital unit staff. Under general supervision by a pharmacist, coordinates and performs as necessary the technical activities of a pharmacy service area. Under general supervision by a technician supervisor carries out activities associated with training and coordination of Pharmacy Technician Trainees, Certified Pharmacy Technicians, and Pharmacy Student Interns. Provides supervision of Pharmacy Technician Trainees, Certified Pharmacy Technicians, and Pharmacy Student Interns. This position will work 8 hour shifts scheduled between 8:00 am - 6:30 pm, primarily 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday. Occasional weekend shifts may be required. If working a weekend, days off will be variable before and after the weekend worked. Location worked will be Ambulatory Care - Meds to Beds.

Duties to include:

1. Coordinates daily technical functions for assigned work areas.

  • Provides supervision to Pharmacy Technician Trainees, Certified Pharmacy Technicians, and Pharmacy Student Interns.
  • Reassigns work areas and duties for Pharmacy Technician Trainees, Certified Pharmacy Technicians, and Pharmacy Student Interns based on workload.
  • Provides feedback to supervisor regarding performance of technicians.
  • Coordinates procurement of equipment, inventory, labels, or other supplies as needed.
  • Works on-line performing all required Certified Pharmacy Technician and Support Services Specialist duties. Remains knowledgeable of area Revenue Cycle Representative workflow.
2. Assists with interviewing, orienting, training, scheduling, and providing work performance feedback.

Assists with interviewing technician applicants.

Assists the supervisor with coordination of training new staff including documentation of training.

Conducts training and provides remedial training as needed.

Assists in preparing work schedules for Pharmacy Technician Trainees, Certified Pharmacy Technicians, and Pharmacy Student Interns.

Participates in administering competency assessments, certification and re-certification for performing specific job responsibilities.

Provides performance feedback for both newly hired and existing staff (Tech’s, students, pharmacists, residents, and externship students).

3. Monitors performance and maintenance of pharmacy area and equipment.

Monitors operation of assigned equipment and automation (ScriptPro Robot, Compounding equipment). Performs minor adjustments on equipment or initiates request for repair or replacement.

Assures that equipment maintenance is completed and documented.

Assures that only certified personnel are using equipment in a safe and proper manner.

Assures monthly area audits are accurate and completed in a timely manner.

Continuously evaluates the organization and neatness of the area. Provides workflow feedback and makes changes as appropriate.

4. Participates in database maintenance. Assists with computer and cash register database maintenance.

5. Participates in inventory management.

Coordinates inventory activities for assigned area including daily and monthly inventories and return to stock medication with associated adjudication and void, credit, and rebill requests.

Participates in activities related to medication recalls.

Coordinates adjustment of inventory levels to meet current needs.

Runs drug usage reports as requested.

6. Participates in cash collection and reconciliation activities.

Assures that patient or third party pricing and billing errors, issues and complaints are resolved. Acts as an advisor for any questions regarding communication with patient.

Coordinates the identification and reconciliation of third party rejections.

Verification of and balancing of cash register tapes with funds received.

7. Participates in management activities.

  • Provides assistance with project analysis.
  • Provides assistance with coordination of new projects.
  • Conducts meetings to convey information.
  • Maintains files related to pharmacy operations.
  • Acts as a positive role model. Communicates with clear, positive verbal and written messages to individuals within the department as well as with patients, the general public, and other departments. Fosters teamwork by encouraging and assisting others.
8. Position includes all responsibilities performed by Certified Pharmacy Technicians in the AmbulatoryCare Pharmacies.

Educational Requirements:

Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.

National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification.

High school diploma or the equivalent.

Experience

Any combination of four years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR

Four years of experience as a pharmacy technician

Desired Qualifications:

Ability to perform ratio/proportion equations

Experience with inventory maintenance activities

Experience working in team environment

Experience working in detail-oriented work environment

Knowledge of windows based computer programs

Experience working in environment requiring accuracy

Experience working in healthcare with one-on-one patient interaction & experience handling challenging interactions in work environment.

Prefer National Career Readiness Certificate at Silver Level.
