Job summary

HyperStrong is seeking a Senior Performance Engineer to drive performance analysis and advanced troubleshooting across a fleet of utility-scale BESS assets. You will work with field service, commissioning, and engineering teams to optimize system performance, reliability, and commissioning success.

The role requires 4+ years in BESS or grid-connected energy systems, hands-on testing experience, and strong RCA skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or related discipline.
• 4+ years of experience with utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) or grid-connected energy systems.
• Hands-on battery capacity testing, performance testing, commissioning or system acceptance testing.
• Proven troubleshooting experience with BMS, PCS, EMS, SCADA and monitoring platforms.
• Strong understanding of battery performance, BMS, PCS, grid interconnection, and data interpretation.
• Ability to lead technical troubleshooting during outages and critical events.
• Excellent communication across engineering, service and customer teams.
• Willingness to support commissioning, testing and outage response.

Responsibilities

• Investigate anomalies and degradation indicators; drive corrective actions.
• Diagnose complex issues across BMS, PCS, EMS, SCADA, and monitoring platforms.
• Analyze alarms, logs, telemetry, and time-series data to identify root causes.
• Develop test plans, evaluate results, and provide technical recommendations.
• Lead Tier 1 outage troubleshooting, testing, recovery and validation.
• Support commissioning, integration and acceptance testing of systems.
• Prepare technical reports and customer-facing findings; maintain records.
• Collaborate with Product and Software Engineering to improve performance and processes.
• Provide input for customer communications and engineering decisions.

As our North American business continues to expand, we are looking for an experienced Senior Performance Engineer to join our growing Service team. This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy solving complex technical challenges, analyzing system performance, and working closely with field service, commissioning, and engineering teams to continuously improve utility-scale BESS projects.

What You’ll Do

As a Senior Performance Engineer, you'll serve as the technical expert supporting performance analysis, advanced troubleshooting, and system optimization across our operational BESS fleet.

Your responsibilities include:

• Analyze battery system performance, usable capacity, efficiency, availability, and compliance with contractual requirements.
• Investigate abnormal performance trends, degradation indicators, and system limitations while driving corrective actions through resolution.
• Independently diagnose complex issues involving BMS, PCS, EMS, SCADA, and monitoring platforms.
• Analyze alarms, event logs, telemetry, and time-series data to identify root causes across hardware, software, controls, and configuration layers.
• Develop electrical test plans, evaluate test results, and provide technical recommendations during root cause investigations.
• Lead technical troubleshooting during Tier 1 outages, including diagnostic strategy, testing, system recovery, and validation.
• Support battery capacity testing, performance testing, commissioning, integration testing, system tuning, and acceptance testing.
• Serve as the primary technical escalation point for performance-related field issues.
• Provide technical support to Field Service and Commissioning teams during critical troubleshooting and recovery activities.
• Prepare technical reports, performance summaries, RCA documentation, and customer-facing technical findings.
• Maintain detailed technical records to support continuous improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate with Product Engineering, Software Engineering, and global engineering teams to improve system performance, firmware, software, and service processes.
• Provide technical input for customer communications, technical risk assessments, and engineering decision-making.

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
• 4+ years of experience supporting utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), power electronics, or grid-connected energy systems.
• Hands‑on experience with battery capacity testing, performance testing, commissioning, or system acceptance testing.
• Proven experience troubleshooting complex utility-scale BESS systems using BMS, PCS, EMS, SCADA, and monitoring platforms.
• Strong understanding of:
  • Battery performance, degradation mechanisms, and capacity validation
  • BMS architecture, controls logic, and battery data interpretation
  • PCS operation, grid interconnection, and protection systems
  • Experience analyzing alarms, event logs, telemetry, and time-series data to perform Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
• Ability to independently lead technical troubleshooting efforts during critical system outages.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering, commissioning, service, and customer teams.
• Willingness to support commissioning activities, testing, and emergency outage response when required.
