Job summary

American Family Insurance's Payment Technology team seeks a Lead Application Development Engineer to drive secure, scalable payment applications from concept to production and migrate legacy systems to cloud-native architectures.

You will partner with product, engineering, architecture, and business teams to design and deliver resilient payment capabilities, mentor engineers, and apply cloud and AI-enabled practices to improve quality, speed, and reliability.

Qualifications

• Approximately 10+ years in software engineering or enterprise solution delivery.
• 7+ years with Java, Spring Boot, or comparable backend technologies.
• 5+ years building and deploying cloud-native applications, ideally on AWS, using microservices and REST APIs.
• Experience modernizing legacy or high-volume transactional applications in regulated environments.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical direction for secure, scalable payment applications from concepts to production.
• Modernize legacy solutions with cloud-native, microservices, API, event-driven patterns.
• Translate business needs into scalable designs and delivery plans.
• Maintain close coding involvement for complex capabilities and integration challenges.
• Set engineering standards across design, testing, security, observability, and production readiness.
• Mentor engineers and grow the team’s technical capabilities.
