Job summary

Block, Inc. seeks an experienced engineer to design, build, and scale customer-facing payment APIs. You will lead high-impact projects and operate critical systems serving global traffic, while shaping the team’s technical direction and mentoring others.

A strong background in payments, distributed systems, and AI-assisted tooling is required. You will collaborate with product and engineering partners across Block to translate payment requirements into reusable capabilities, and contribute to

Qualifications

Experience building, maintaining, and scaling customer-facing financial or payment APIs.
Experience designing and operating high-volume distributed systems where correctness, security, and reliability matter.
Knowledge of payment API concerns like idempotency, retries, asynchronous processing, and backward compatibility.
Track record leading complex engineering projects from unclear requirements to production.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and scale customer-facing payment APIs with clear contracts and reliable behavior.
Lead complex projects end to end from requirements to testing and rollout.
Operate critical payment systems serving worldwide traffic and participate in on-call rotation.
Improve performance, observability, fault tolerance, and security; automate repetitive ops tasks.
Mentor teammates and shape technical decisions through reviews and documentation.
