Job description

Under the guidance and direction of the Parks Department Division Manager, the Senior Parks Technician will assist with day-to-day operations within the Parks TEC division (Parks, Trails, and Environmental Conservation) in the maintenance and upkeep of parkland, rights-of-way, athletic fields, facilities, and landscaped areas.
  • Performs advanced-level maintenance of park grounds, trails, athletic fields, medians, and landscaped areas using a variety of power tools and equipment.

  • Assists with prioritizing and organizing daily assignments for the crew when the Crew Leader is unavailable or off-site.

  • Provides informal guidance and field support to Parks Technicians and seasonal employees during routine tasks or project work.

  • Performs skilled and advanced tasks such as turf maintenance, irrigation troubleshooting, hardscape repairs, and safe chemical application (fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides).

  • Conducts routine inspections of park assets, identifying and reporting hazards, equipment issues, or maintenance needs.

  • Serves as a primary operator for complex equipment such as skid steers, mini-excavators, backhoes, trenchers, and zero-turn mowers; provides guidance and informal training to other staff on proper and safe equipment operation.

  • Assists with event preparation, logistics, and teardown for City-sponsored events and activities, including working evenings or weekends as needed.

  • Ensures proper care and preventative maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles assigned to the crew.

  • Completes assigned work orders accurately and timely using the City’s asset management or work order system.

  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of maintenance facilities, storage areas, and workspaces.

  • Works collaboratively with other divisions (e.g., Trails, Landscape, Beautification, Park Maintenance) to complete multi-department projects.

  • Demonstrates working knowledge and field experience across multiple Parks TEC divisions, including trails maintenance, conservation practices, and general parks operations; supports cross-divisional tasks as needed to meet departmental priorities.Follows all City safety policies and procedures, reporting unsafe conditions and assisting with site safety setup when needed.

  • Communicates regularly with supervisors regarding field conditions, resource needs, and project updates.

  • Assists with inventory management for division supplies and equipment.

  • Responds to after-hours emergencies or assignments as needed.

  • Performs duties of Parks Technician as needed and other duties as assigned.

Community Relations

o Maintains desired working relationship with employees of Public Facilities, and all team Kyle members.

o Provides support to all City department programs and/or activities as needed.

o Actively participates in creating and providing desired service levels to the citizens of Kyle and non-citizens outside the City of Kyle.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of applicable State, Federal, and local laws involving parks and recreation, landscaping, pesticide, maintenance.

  • Ability to maintain cooperate relationships with other City employees and officials, and with the general public.

  • Ability to remain calm and act resourcefully in an emergency.

  • ·Strong understanding of landscape maintenance, turf care, irrigation systems, and park facility upkeep.

  • Ability to lead and mentor staff while maintaining a positive team environment.

  • Working knowledge of work order systems, safety regulations, and equipment troubleshooting.

  • Skilled in safe operation of heavy machinery, power tools, hand tools, push mowers, front line mowers, edgers, trimmers, pruning tools, chainsaws, air blowers, chippers, hydro-mulch machines, City vehicle, and pesticide/herbicide sprayers, tractors, flatbed trucks, and dump trucks.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents, maintenance plans, and operational procedures

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English with City of Kyle staff and the public, at minimum, basic conversational English.

  • Ability to read City policies and procedures, written instructions, general correspondence, and warning labels, and traffic signs; ability to perform basic math skill



  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Two (2) or more years of experience as an equipment operator, park maintenance, right-of-way maintenance, landscaping, general construction, irrigation, electrical, or a related field.

  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid Texas Driver’s License and be eligible for coverage under the City of Kyle’s vehicle insurance provider.

  • Proficient in operating landscaping and maintenance equipment, including mowers, trimmers,

  • tractors, and other power tools.

  • Working knowledge of safety procedures when handling tools, machinery, and chemicals.

  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physical labor

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior experience in a lead role.

  • Certifications in pesticide application, irrigation, or turf management.

  • Experience in irrigation installation and troubleshooting.

  • Knowledge of minor plumbing, electrical, or carpentry repair.

  • Prior municipal or government experience in a similar role.

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Physical requirements include lifting to one hundred (100) pounds occasionally. Subject to standing and walking frequently; vision constantly; sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, kneeling, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, hearing, talking and foot controls.

  • Working conditions involve exposure to variable and/or extreme weather conditions; machinery with moving parts, hazardous chemicals/materials, and infectious diseases is involved.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
