The Senior Parks Equipment Technician will perform and direct skilled mechanic functions for department equipment maintenance and repair. Responsibilities include diagnosing problems, preventive maintenance, fabricating parts, welding, and occasional bodywork. The role ensures equipment availability, safety, and cleanliness, overseeing the fleet's operation and administration. The position implements a preventive maintenance program, maintains parts and labor records, orders supplies, and keeps a clean service area. It involves training lower-level staff and occasionally operating equipment on job sites. Extensive knowledge of specialized tools and techniques in equipment maintenance is required. Performance is evaluated based on equipment condition, callbacks, and results. Work is performed independently within well-established guidelines, using an automated maintenance management system for data input and retrieval.
Essential Job Duties
- Provide respectful and professional service in all interactions between co-workers, internal and external customers and the public at large.
- Maintain a positive and productive environment ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, goals and objectives of the City, Department and Division.
- Train and lead the day-to-day task performance of crew members in work procedures based on workload and direction as provided by supervisor; train in proper maintenance and equipment procedures and directs task work; ensures that work is performed in a safe manner; provide coaching and support to crew as needed for task completion.
- Provide lead direction and reviews completed work to ensure quality and completeness; provides input to the supervisor on staff performance.
- Inspect and diagnose causes of malfunctioning diesel and gasoline-powered construction equipment and/or vehicles, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and/or pneumatic systems.
- Implement a comprehensive preventative maintenance program, conduct inspections to check/test equipment for function and safe operation and perform needed repairs.
- Utilize computerized fleet management software to track equipment/vehicle maintenance and history. Input data including parts, hours, and mechanic notes.
- Utilize computerized diagnostic tools to interface with onboard electronics and identify malfunctioning systems and/or performance tune-up needs.
- Perform welding of steel and aluminum utilizing various welding equipment such as stick, acetylene, MIG and TIG welders.
- Assist the supervisor in the writing of specifications for new equipment and vehicle purchases. Where assigned, will inspect new equipment and/or vehicles for compliance with the specifications and maintenance/repair work performed by outside vendors.
- Evaluate assigned work projects, including materials and staff resources needed to perform the work; estimate time, materials, and equipment necessary for the successful completion of work projects; and acquire necessary resources as appropriate.
- Investigate and apply new operational techniques, materials, and equipment to affect improved and more economical work performance in the department.
- Provide recommendations and purchase approved materials, supplies, and small equipment for day-to-day operations.
- Determine quantity and types of equipment/materials to be used for work orders; maintain inventory of supplies and equipment as assigned.
- Collaborate as necessary with co-workers to complete tasks and provide required updates.
- Adhere to policies, laws, and regulations related to environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal, and chemical substances encountered in their work.
- Perform the job safely and in compliance with safety policies and procedures.

Job Qualifications – Education, experience, and training that are required or desirable in order to effectively perform the job at the time of hire. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Additional requirements and/or substitutions may be requested and require HR approval.
- A high school diploma or the equivalent is required. Certification from a vocational or technical training program is preferred.
- At least four years of successful experience in the maintenance and repair of gas—and diesel-powered equipment, welding, and hydraulic-powered equipment is required.
- At least one year of experience in a lead capacity is preferred.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification within 1 year of hire date.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A CDL with airbrake endorsement within 180 days of employment required.
- A valid driver’s license is required upon hire.
- National Institute of Automotive Excellence (ASE) certificate is desirable.
