Summary Objective

Hiring range is negotiable between $42,495 and $55,239 depending on a candidate's qualifications and experience

The purpose of this position is to provide technical work in the safe and compliant spraying and/or spreading of nutrients and pesticides on city parks, sports turf, golf courses, and other city properties. The employee ensures that targeted areas receive the proper application rates of micro and macro nutrients and pesticides to meet aesthetic and economic thresholds.

Essential Functions
  • Maintains clean and safe operating equipment, including updating service records.
  • Operates all spray equipment in compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Identifies pest control needs and schedules treatments throughout the year.
  • Communicates with athletics coordinators or assigned personnel at school facilities and city departments to schedule pest control applications.
  • Calibrates and corrects spray equipment to ensure consistent product application.
  • Collects soil, water, and tissue samples for testing and evaluates results to plan future applications.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of laws governing pesticide use, storage, and handling for turf, roadsides, and aquatics.
  • Knowledge of turf and ornamental agriculture and pesticide environmental effects.
  • Knowledge of the importance of personal protective equipment.
  • Skill in mechanical repair and preventative maintenance of equipment.
  • Problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to operate as a skilled spray technician, monitoring gauges and environment to produce a void‑free, overlap‑free product.
  • Leadership and supervisory skills for Park Technicians, including planning, delegating, and monitoring work.
  • Courteous communication with citizens.
  • Planning and material acquisition skills to complete tasks on schedule.
  • Teamwork ability.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Judgment and courtesy in public interactions.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by training in varied skilled trades.
  • Three (3) years of experience related to parks maintenance, groundskeeping, landscape maintenance, turf management, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses
  • Valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Valid North Carolina Spray License.
  • Certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid, or willingness to obtain it.
Physical Demands

Medium work involving walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing, and raising objects. Frequently exert forces between 20 and 50 pounds, occasionally up to 100 pounds.

  • Routine exposure to bright/dim light, dusts, pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, moisture, noise, wildlife, vibration, fumes, traffic, and moving machinery.
