Job summary

Prime Controls, L.P. in Dallas, Texas, seeks a Senior Panel Designer to craft high-quality panel drawings, PLC wiring diagrams, and related documentation for industrial automation projects across manufacturing and customer sites.

This role leads the Panel Design Group, mentors junior designers, and helps set department standards. You will read customer diagrams, coordinate with engineering and production, conduct power/heat calculations, and drive design quality from concept through field

Qualifications

  • 2-year technical associate degree.

  • Lead complex panel design efforts for large-scale control systems.
  • Read and interpret customer diagrams; communicate objectives to the project team.
  • Consult with engineering and manufacturing to resolve problems.
  • Provide guidance to designers and drafters.

  • Perform panel power and heat calculations and updates per standards.

Overview

Job OverviewAs a Senior Panel Designer, you will play a critical role in the successful execution of industrial automation and control system projects by developing high-quality panel design documentation for manufacturing, installation, and customer deliverables. This position is expected to serve as a technical leader within the Panel Design Group by driving design quality, mentoring junior designers, supporting continuous improvement initiatives, and helping establish and maintain department standards across multiple industries and project types.

A Typical Day at Prime Controls

  • Leads complex panel design efforts involving large scale industrial control systems, PLC architectures, network architecture, etc…
  • Reads and interprets customer diagrams and documentation and communicates with project team to understand objectives and preferences.
  • Confer with engineering staff, manufacturing staff and other personnel to resolve problems.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to other designers and drafters.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to production on all aspects of the panel design.
  • Selects Parts and interpret vendor cut sheets to determine functionality of components.
  • Uses AutoCAD/AutoCAD Electrical and EPLAN to create and update panel drawings.
  • Develops panel layout and detail drawings.
  • Develops PLC module and electrical drawings.
  • Performs panel power and heat calculations.
  • Performs updates to panel layout and detail drawings based on markups in accordance with company and customer standards.

  • Performs self and peer review checks of panel drawings.
  • Supports standardization initiatives including template development, symbol libraries, macros, drafting/design standards, and workflow improvements.
  • Identifies design risks, constructability concerns, and scope gaps early in the project lifecycle and proactively communicates solutions.
  • Assists with estimating efforts, project planning, and engineering coordination when required.
  • Supports implementation and continuous improvement of AutoCAD Electrical and Eplan Pro Panel workflows and standards.

What You Will Bring

The Basic

  • 2-year technical associate degree
  • 10+ years’ experience as a designer/drafter
  • 5+ years’ experience in AutoCad Electrical
  • 5+ years’ experience with NEC & UL 508A/698A
  • Strong understanding of industrial control panel design practices and electrical drafting standards.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Applications (Word, Excel, Access, etc…)
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, network architectures, and customer specifications/drawing plans
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on quality and consistency
  • Must have advanced knowledge of drafting fundamentals including orthographic views, standard dimensioning practices, scaling plus English and metric units of measurement.
  • Must have advanced knowledge of Eplan Pro Panel design fundamentals.
  • Must be capable of reading and understanding customer requirements in the form of quotations and specifications
  • Ability to adapt in a fast-paced project-driven environment with shifting priorities and aggressive schedules.
  • Ability to work independently remotely, in-office, or hybrid.

The Preferred

  • Project management experience
  • 5+ years’ experience in Eplan Pro Panel
  • 5+ years’ experience leading and mentoring other team members
  • EPlan: experience with EEC, scripting, and macro development
  • UL MTR Certified
  • Experience building and/or installing control panels
  • Experience developing and maintaining drafting and design standards, templates, and automation tools
