Job description

The PACS Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the PACS equipment, including image workflow, archive and prefetch maintenance, end user support, and acting as the interface or liaison to radiology, IT, and various PACS and imaging-related vendors. The position requires IT experience with servers, workstations, and networks, as well as a clear understanding of radiology and clinical environments. The role works closely with department managers, supervisors, radiologists, and technologists to ensure proper, safe, and compliant operation of the DICOM imaging workflow throughout the enterprise.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Configurations, system security, including anti-virus updates, application of preventative maintenance updates, and ensuring network security from unauthorized access.
  2. Ensure the seamless transfer of DICOM images from modalities to the PACS system, remote reading/processing stations, and storage within the database for archive.
  3. Oversee the functionality of the internal PACS system and all associated networks.
  4. Perform regular inspections to ensure all equipment is well maintained, up to date, operating in a safe environment, and in compliance with HIPAA and internal policies, including maintaining updated and secure records.
  5. Manage and coordinate activities requiring intra-departmental efforts between IT, radiology, and PACS and imaging vendors.
  6. Work closely with radiologists, physicians, technologists, IT staff, and other healthcare professionals to communicate PACS system performance, issues, and updates effectively.
  7. Collaborate with the IT infrastructure team to ensure seamless integration of PACS with other clinical platforms.
  8. Proactively identify and resolve PACS-related issues to minimize disruption to clinical workflows.
  9. Build and manage new and existing networking PACS configurations for new Teleradiology partners.
  10. Analyze system performance data to identify areas for improvement.
  11. Implement solutions to enhance system efficiency, reliability, and user satisfaction.
  12. Perform PACS-related training and onboarding for new and existing users.
  13. Add and remove users from the system.
  14. Provide end-user PACS application support.
  15. Manage study administration, including mismatch corrections, merges, or splits.
  16. Set up and configure PACS applications on end-user laptops or workstations.
  17. Perform initial troubleshooting of the system and network if problems occur.
  18. Provide periodic reports to the Radiology Director on the system's status.
  19. Propose system additions and improvements.
  20. Participate in system installations, updates, or refreshes as needed and within budget.
Qualifications:
  1. Associate’s degree (Bachelor’s preferred) in IT or a related industry discipline, with at least 5 years of PACS experience.
  2. At least 3 years of leadership experience managing an on-premise PACS system, with strong understanding of DICOM and HL-7 in radiology workflow, and experience with HIPAA.
  3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  4. Strong self-management and time management skills.
