Job summary

RMS Energy is seeking a Senior P&C Field Technician in Knoxville, TN to lead testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of protection and control systems at high-voltage substations.

You will work on relay schemes, pilot channel equipment, SCADA integration, and provide mentoring to field personnel while upholding safety protocols and customer timelines. This role requires strong practical knowledge, independent planning, and travel readiness.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in substation commissioning, relay testing, and P&C troubleshooting.
• Experience leading projects and coordinating relay settings.
• Strong understanding of substation design, SCADA, and integration/testing.
• Hands-on experience with three-phase protection schemes and testing equipment.
• Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook for reports and communication.

Responsibilities

• Test and maintain protective relays (electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor) and verify trip/alarm/metering functions.
• Commission new substations and troubleshoot P&C systems, including pilot channel equipment (power line carrier, fiber optics, line traps, CVTs).
• Read and interpret wiring diagrams and apply testing procedures to substation equipment.
• Plan and execute test activities independently while meeting customer timelines and safety protocols.
• Support field personnel with technical tasks and mentoring.

We’re looking for aSenior P&C Field Technicianto join our growing Field Services team. In this role, you’ll lead advanced testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of protection and control (P&C) systems across high-voltage substations. You’ll work on complex relay schemes, pilot channel equipment, and SCADA integration, contributing to power system reliability across the country.

What You’ll Do:

• Test and maintain protective relays (electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor) and verify all trip, alarm, and metering functions
• Commission new substations and troubleshoot P&C systems, including pilot channel equipment like power line carrier, fiber optics, line traps, and CVTs
• Read and interpret wiring diagrams and apply testing procedures to various substation equipment
• Plan and execute test activities independently while adhering to customer timelines and safety protocols
• Support field service personnel with technical tasks and mentoring as needed.
• Communicate effectively with customers, field teams, and internal operations
• Perform work in both indoor and outdoor environments, across diverse conditions.
• Follow strict safety and PPE usage protocols due to noise, electrical hazards, and elevated work areas

The Experience We’re Looking For:

• 5+ years of experience in substation commissioning, relay testing, and P&C troubleshooting
• Experience performing project leadership, system integration, and relay settings coordination experience
• Strong understanding of substation design, SCADA systems, and integration/automation testing
• Hands-on experience with test equipment and three-phase protection schemes.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook for reports and communication
• Ability to manage multiple projects and work independently with minimal supervision

Additional Requirements:

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Valid driver’s license
• Must successfully complete a background check and pre-employment/random drug tests
• Able to travel frequently (minimum 80%) with overnight stays as needed
• Flexible for overtime, weekends, holidays, and night work
• Annual safety training is required and may involve out-of-state travel

Bonus Points for:

• An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in electrical technology, power systems engineering, or mechanical engineering
• Experience working in live substation environments
• Ability to mentor junior technicians or lead field crews
• Strong knowledge of SCADA, fault data, and substation automation systems
