Job summary

Tetra Tech is seeking a Protection & Control Engineer to lead the design and development of protection systems for transmission, distribution, and renewable energy projects. You will coordinate relay logic, SCADA architecture, and substation automation while mentoring junior engineers.

You will interact with utilities and EPC partners to ensure standards compliance, prepare technical proposals, and drive project success across multiple engagements.

Qualifications

• Requires a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
• PE registration in the United States is required.
• 4+ years of experience in protection and control for transmission, distribution, HVDC and renewable projects.
• Strong knowledge of protective relays, control systems, SCADA architecture and communication protocols (DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850, GOOSE).
• Experience with SEL, GE and Siemens protection relays.
• Familiarity with RTU programming and substation automation.
• Proven ability to lead multiple projects, meet timelines and interact with clients.
• Excellent communication and mentorship skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and development of protection and control systems for transmission, distribution, and renewable projects (AC/DC schematics, single-line and wiring diagrams, relay logic, relay panel layouts, communication diagrams)
• Perform protection coordination studies and relay programming
• Oversee SCADA architecture, RTU configurations, IEC 61850 GOOSE, and substation automation
• Plan, schedule, and monitor project work with Discipline Manager and Project Manager
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers
• Ensure compliance with CSA, IEEE, NERC, NFPA 70 and client standards
• Collaborate with utilities, developers, and EPC contractors to define project requirements
• Assist in preparing technical proposals, estimates, specifications, reports and engineering documentation
• Interface with clients, vendors, and multidisciplinary teams to drive project success
• Lead multiple projects and manage timelines and client interactions

Key requirements

• Strong knowledge of protective relays, control systems, SCADA architecture, and communication protocols (DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850, GOOSE) xklufbp
• Experience with SEL, GE, and Siemens protection relays
• Familiarity with RTU and Power Plant Controller programming
• Proficiency in ETAP for system analysis and relay coordination; asset familiarity with ASPEN, CYME, EasyPower, SKM, PSCAD
• Familiarity with substation automation, Interconnection NERC compliance reports, NERC CIP compliance, and cybersecurity best practices
• Ability to lead multiple projects, manage timelines, and interact with clients
