Job description

Capstan Medical: Creating a new standard for minimally invasive structural heart treatment

At Capstan Medical, we’re driven by an unwavering commitment to transforming the treatment of heart valve disease. By merging surgical robotics with catheter-based technology and next generation implants, we’ve pioneered a patient-optimized approach to repair and replace heart valves.

Our innovative technology offers a significantly less invasive alternative to traditional open-heart surgery while ensuring precise and reliable placement of the heart valve implant. With these advancements, we may be able to provide patients with a solution to their heart valve disease while significantly reducing recovery time and minimizing the risk of complications. With a dedicated team of heart valve device experts and robotics engineers, we are fully committed to developing a comprehensive and transformative solution that will positively impact the lives of individuals affected by this condition.

Capstan Medical is uniquely positioned in Santa Cruz. This gives us access to the amazing technical talent of the Bay Area, but in an environment that we feel is conducive to doing our best creative work. Our office is adjacent to large tracts of open space with bicycle trails straight from the office doors offering access to the hills and beaches of Wilder Ranch State Park for road/mountain bicycle riding, hiking, and surfing.

Come join us and become part of a team revolutionizing heart valve treatment!

Description:

  • We are building a novel medical robotic application, developing systems on the cutting edge of efficiency, thermals, packing volume, and reliability and are looking for an experienced electrical engineer who can join our small fast paced team and lead the electrical development from our initial system to a successful product.
  • Co-develop the next generation of motor drives with our external partner, focused on minimizing thermals
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product and clinical engineering to understand the user needs, and then collaborate with them and mechanical, controls, software, and systems engineers to create practical and desirable product architectures (increased level of leadership for Staff)
  • Technical leader on projects from concept to product launch; managing requirements, design, testing, transfer to manufacturing, and product release process (increased level of project scope for Staff)
  • Create prototypes and early designs with a path to a successful scalable product already built in. Move quickly through fast feedback and iteration loops.
  • On-site participation in building and bringing up prototype robotic systems and support in their pre-clinical lab use, with a focus on all things electrical
  • Align individual work to best support company goals. Identifying high risk items and being part of developing solutions
  • Help build a new robust and high performance hardware team in addition to building a world class product
  • Technical mentor to junior engineers and peers (increased level of mentorship for Staff)
  • Document and communicate your work through design reviews and as appropriate released documents as part of the product development process
  • Identify gaps and pitch in as needed to ensure that the team meets their goals and objectives

Skills:

  • Experience designing custom PCBs with tight heat/power budgets and real time communication protocols (experience architecting entire electrical systems for Staff)
  • Experience with component selection (including cable and connector selection) and designing for high reliability
  • Experience designing and testing to ISO 60601 requirements (Significant experience in leading compliance process for 60601 requirements expected for Staff)
  • Experience with using schematic and layout software (Altium preferred) for creating detailed printed circuit board designs and drawings for manufacturing
  • Ability to select and manage processes and vendors that scale to product (quality, consistency, and cost). Collaborate with vendors to find optimal solutions and ensure successful results
  • Understanding of how early design decisions cascade into outcomes later. Ability to make smart decisions regarding DFM, clinical workflow, regulations, and risk management to save time and effort later

Requirements:

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline, or equivalent work experience
  • Senior: Expecting 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Staff: Expecting 9+ years of relevant experience
  • Comfortable working with high levels of ambiguity and an ability to convert that into tangible outcomes
  • Experience with designing, manufacturing transfer, and shipping of medical device capital equipment or equivalent complexity systems
  • Experience with medical device (or equivalent) development process, design control, design verification, and regulatory processes
