Job summary

BRELYON seeks a Senior Optics Engineer to lead optical system design, simulation, and optimization for immersive display products. The role is on-site in San Mateo, CA, with cross-functional collaboration across hardware, software, and product teams to translate requirements into optical specs and drive prototypes toward production.

The ideal candidate has postdoc/PhD in optics or related fields (or equivalent experience), strong lab skills, and proficiency with optical design tools.

Qualifications

• Postdoc/PhD in optics, applied physics, EE, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Strong optics exposure across XR, light-field, and display tech.
• Experience integrating optical, mechanical and electronic components.
• Proven ability to model, simulate, and validate optical systems.
• Excellent written and spoken communication; cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Make the optical system design from lab design to mass production.
• Familiar in Zemax/Code V/OSLO and similar tools.
• Partner with external vendors for manufacturing processes, metrology and quality control.
• Model electromagnetic phenomena of nanoscale structures using FFT, FEM, FDTD tools.
• Define system requirements and deliver hardware, software, and calibration to meet specs.
• Use 3D design software for designing and review of materials and geometries.
• Build and test product components and contribute to patents.
• Model, build, test, and refine prototypes and characterization systems.
• Stay ahead with state-of-the-art manufacturing and materials for future product lines.
• Apply rigorous engineering and tolerance techniques to high-precision design.
• Works in the lab and behind the computer.
