Job summary

Atom Computing in Boulder, CO is seeking a Senior Optical Engineer to lead the design of opto-mechanical subsystems and drive build-out, fixtures and processes for precision alignment and assembly.

Reports to the Optical Engineering Manager; on-site five days per week. The role offers comprehensive perks and a base salary range of $150,000–$180,000 plus annual bonus and equity, plus medical/dental/vision, PTO, 401k match, disability, FSA, and daily meals in the office.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's in Optical Sciences or related field; advanced degree preferred.
• 5+ years optical design experience.
• 4+ years hands-on optics assembly in a lab.
• Experience with high-NA imaging systems.
• Proficient in Zemax, FRED, or equivalent.
• Experience with 3D CAD (Onshape, SolidWorks).
• Strong project management; ability to lead independently.
• Detail-oriented with analytical thinking.
• Collaborative, open work style.

Responsibilities

• Lead cross-functional design of optical subsystems with mechanical engineers and physicists.
• Define system architecture and balance competing requirements.
• Create designs and specifications from component to system level.
• Evaluate tolerance and stray light analyses for designs.
• Develop alignment procedures for optical designs.
• Lead hands-on assembly and precision alignment.
• Characterize the performance of optical subsystems.
• Capable of lifting objects up to 25 pounds.
