Job summary

UCAR in the Boulder, CO area is seeking a Scientist IV to advance coupled ocean and sea ice JEDI-based data assimilation within NOAA's GFS framework. The role focuses on integrating marine observations, transitioning from retrieved products to direct radiance assimilation, and addressing model biases to improve sea ice forecasts.

The position involves mentoring staff, shaping project directions, and engaging with sponsors and stakeholders across the Earth system science community.

Qualifications

• Typically requires a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree and 10 years related experience, or a Master’s degree and 6 years of experience, or a PhD in a scientific discipline and 2 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Has advanced knowledge of scientific principles, methods, and observational and/or modelling techniques in a primary discipline, with a sound understanding of related fields.
• Possesses advanced skills for data analysis and synthesis including statistical, computational, or simulation-based approaches.

Responsibilities

• Designs and executes scientific projects of significant complexity.
• Leads or coordinates scientific components of projects with goals, methodologies, and timelines.
• Applies advanced data analysis methods to extract insights and validate results.
• Contributes to peer-reviewed publications, reports, and presentations at conferences.
• Mentors less experienced staff and supports collaborative environments.
• Contributes to scientific proposal development and strategic planning.
• Translates complex findings for diverse audiences and informs project direction.
