Job summary

Caltech is seeking a Night Telescope Operator in Pasadena, CA. Under supervision, you will ensure the safe operation of the 200-inch Hale telescope and support astronomers during night sessions. The role involves monitoring instruments and environmental conditions, while also assisting with problem resolution and safety improvements.

Basic qualifications include a high school education with relevant work experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to lift 50 pounds. Experience with telescopes and programming is preferred.

Qualifications

• Ability to work safely in confined or elevated environments.
• Ability to safely work at 5,600-foot altitude.
• Ability to work nights.

Responsibilities

• Operate the 200-inch Hale telescope and Palomar robotic telescopes.
• Support observers with scientific instrumentation.
• Monitor sky conditions to safeguard telescope facilities.

Skills

Ability to lift 50 pounds

Effective oral and written communications

PC skills including MS Office

Skilled in interpretation of meteorological data

Education

High school education or equivalent with 4 years of work experience
