Job summary

Eos Atomics in San Francisco seeks a Senior Neutral Particle Beam (NPB) Scientist to lead physics design and optimization of NBI/NPB systems. You bridge theory and hardware, develop beamlines, and guide high-power beam research within a fast, rigorous startup environment.

You will mentor junior scientists, collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and vacuum teams, and drive experimental campaigns from concept to commissioning at multi-megawatt scales.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or M.S. in Applied Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related quantitative field.
• 5+ years of post-PhD experience (or 8+ years post-Master’s) with high-power particle beams, ion sources, high-voltage engineering, UHV systems, or fusion NBI systems.
• Deep theoretical and practical knowledge of atomic collision cross-sections, multi-aperture electrostatic optics, and neutralization physics.

Responsibilities

• Lead the physics architecture for high-power, multi-megawatt neutral beam systems.
• Model beam propagation, charge-exchange losses, and energy deposition in plasmas and targets.
• Develop numerical codes and use CAD-integrated particle tracking for design optimization.
• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and vacuum teams to specify high-voltage and vacuum system requirements.
• Prototype, test, and lead beamline commissioning and real-time tuning during plasma campaigns.
• Mentor junior scientists and publish technical reports.
