Job summary

Detroit Public Schools Community District seeks a Network Engineer - Team Lead to guide secure design, implementation, and operations of its enterprise network, including WAN, LAN, wireless, firewall, VPN, and monitoring. Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent education or certifications may be considered.
• CCNA or equivalent; CCNP or higher preferred.
• Security-focused certs such as Security+, CISSP, or CISM preferred.
• ITIL, PM or process-improvement certs preferred or equivalent experience.
• Ability to provide after-hours and on-call support as needed.
• Reliable transportation for travel to District sites; lift 25 pounds.
• 5+ years in enterprise network engineering/operations in large multi-site env.
• Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical work.
• Strong network security and cybersecurity practices knowledge.
• Ability to coordinate with cybersecurity staff, vendors, and stakeholders.
• Advanced experience with routing/switching/VLANs, OSPF/EIGRP/BGP, WAN, VPN, SD-WAN.
• Experience with firewalls, IPS/IDS, secure remote access, and monitoring.
• Wireless design/deployment and high-density wireless environments.
• NOC/monitoring tools experience; network diagnostics and performance dashboards.
• Experience documenting runbooks, standards, and network designs.
• Project planning for large-scale network/security initiatives; risk and change management.

Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate network team's work on installation, configuration, monitoring, and maintenance of enterprise network services.
• Serve as senior expert for WAN, LAN, wireless, Internet, firewall, VPN, and related infrastructure.
• Lead secure network design including segmentation, firewall standards, access control, VPN, and logging.
• Partner with cybersecurity leadership to align decisions with security strategy and incident response needs.
• Coordinate cross-functional security efforts: vulnerability remediation, access reviews, audits, and policy reviews.
• Develop and maintain network documentation, diagrams, runbooks, and implementation plans.
• Use metrics and monitoring data to drive improvements and reduce incidents.
• Lead major network and security initiatives with clear planning, timelines, and stakeholder communication.
• Mentor engineers, review work, and support career development.
