Job summary

Jobtailor seeks a Field Service Test Technician to travel to customer sites (industrial & commercial) to inspect, test, troubleshoot, perform start‑ups and collect data on electrical systems from 480 V to 600 kV.

Role requires willingness to travel across Illinois and bordering states; responsibilities include transformer testing, relay calibration, and high‑voltage switchgear checks. Strong safety adherence and on‑call readiness are essential.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in EPC or ABET‑accredited EE degree.
• NETA certification III or IV desired; Electrician license preferred.
• At least 5 years of switchgear testing & troubleshooting experience.

Responsibilities

• Travel to customer sites (industrial & commercial) to inspect, test, troubleshoot, start‑up and collect data for high voltage systems.
• Test instrument transformers and perform power transformer tests (Doble, TTR, insulation resistance).
• Test and calibrate relays (electro‑mechanical and solid‑state) and perform cable testing (Tan Delta, Power Factor, VLF, DC Hipot).
• Troubleshoot automatic transfer switches and high/low voltage switchgear and circuit breakers; rotate on‑call emergencies.

Job description

Responsibilities

• Field Service Test Technicians travel to customer sites (industrial & commercial) to inspect, test, troubleshoot, perform start-up and collect data of low, medium and high voltage (480 Volt to 600 kV) electrical systems.
• Able to travel to customer job sites across the state and bordering states.
• Instrument transformer tests.
• Power transformer testing – Doble, TTR, Insulation Resistance, etc.
• Preferred if proficient in testing both electro‑mechanical and solid‑state relays.
• Cable testing – Tan Delta, Power Factor, VLF, DC Hipot.
• Automatic transfer switch troubleshooting.
• Low, Medium and High voltage switchgear and circuit breaker testing.
• Moderately complex relay calibration and power metering.
• Rotate emergency on‑call duty and, if called, respond to customer emergencies in a timely manner.

Requirements

• Prefer an Associate’s degree from an accredited 2‑year technical college in Electrical Power & Controls (EPC) or an EE degree from an ABET‑accredited college; similar experience and training from the military (Army Prime Power, Air Force Electrical Power Production, or NAVY Seabee) is acceptable.
• NETA Certification (III or IV) or similar desired; Electrician license preferred.
• Must have at least 5 or more years of relevant experience performing switchgear testing & troubleshooting.
• Must have good PC skills including email, internet, data entry and Microsoft Excel; experience with PowerDB a plus.
• Must be able to work safely and adhere to all electrical safety procedures.
• Prefer OSHA 30‑hour, MSHA, NFPA 70‑E, CPR/First Aid/BBP/AED training; training on each can be provided by Shermco.
• Must be able to crawl, climb, stand and lift up to 100 lbs., with or without reasonable accommodations.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and currently maintain a good driving record.
• Must be willing to work flexibly, including overtime, occasional weekends, holidays, and nights.
