Job summary

Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. in Newport News, VA is seeking a Senior Designer Level 4 to lead the design and execution of highly complex ship systems and components.

You will mentor junior designers, coordinate cross-discipline integration, and oversee drawings through production readiness. The role requires deep knowledge of ship design integration, regulatory compliance, and production processes, with experience leading design teams on large programs.

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree and 6 years of relevant experience required.
• Equivalents accepted: High School/GED + 2 years manufacturing, shipbuilding, trades or military experience; or High School/GED + 4 years related experience.
• Experience with naval or marine ship design is a plus.
• Strong communication and leadership skills are expected.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of complex 2D and 3D models for ship systems and structures.
• Coordinate multi-discipline design integration and ensure proper interfaces.
• Review and approve detailed drawings for accuracy and compliance.
• Mentor Level 1–3 Designers and support training within the design organization.
• Participate in design reviews, readiness meetings, and production support discussions.
• Apply advanced knowledge of materials, welding, and shipyard practices to optimize designs.
