About the Role

This is a hands‑on, physically demanding outdoor field role, not a desk job. Work includes equipment setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting at natural gas facilities, industrial locations, and construction sites. Home-based between assignments means working from home between field assignments; it does not mean the job is performed entirely remotely.

Annual salary: $120,000–$150,000 | Travel: 50–75%

We are seeking a Senior Natural Gas Field Engineer to lead technical execution at customer project sites while remaining directly involved in the work.

This role is home-based between field assignments and requires 50–75% travel for hands‑on work at customer project sites. The engineer will perform and oversee commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and operational support. Work may be performed from home between field assignments; project locations and temporary assignments vary with customer needs.

The role requires independent technical judgment, practical equipment knowledge, clear customer communication, and the ability to guide technicians and junior engineers through demanding field assignments.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and participate in installation, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, and operational support for natural gas equipment and systems.
  • Develop execution plans for odorization, pipeline conditioning, pickling, temporary gas service, and startup activities.
  • Prepare and review engineering calculations addressing gas flow, pressure, equipment capacity, odorant injection, and operating conditions.
  • Select and evaluate equipment, instrumentation, valves, regulators, flowmeters, and control components.
  • Develop operating procedures, commissioning plans, inspection requirements, and troubleshooting guidance.
  • Diagnose equipment and system problems, identify causes, and coordinate corrective actions.
  • Verify installation quality, equipment configuration, test results, and readiness for operation.
  • Direct field technicians and junior engineers, assign technical tasks, and review completed work.
  • Serve as a technical contact for customers, contractors, equipment suppliers, and project stakeholders.
  • Coordinate equipment procurement, mobilization, project schedules, and technical changes.
  • Identify scope changes and communicate their effects on cost, schedule, equipment, and execution.
  • Maintain clear records of engineering decisions, operating conditions, testing, maintenance, and project progress.
  • Participate in safety planning and address changing field conditions before proceeding with affected work.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, chemical, civil, petroleum, or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least five years of relevant natural gas, pipeline, process, or industrial engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated hands‑on experience commissioning and troubleshooting equipment in the field.
  • Ability to interpret piping drawings, control diagrams, equipment specifications, and technical manuals.
  • Working knowledge of applicable natural gas safety requirements and engineering practices.
  • Ability to independently evaluate technical problems and develop practical solutions.
  • Experience coordinating field crews and communicating with customers and contractors.
  • Strong technical writing, project organization, and documentation skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to project sites.
Preferred Experience
  • Natural gas odorization, pipeline conditioning, or odor fade remediation.
  • Pressure regulation, gas measurement, and temporary gas systems.
  • Instrumentation, PLC controls, telemetry, or remote equipment monitoring.
  • Development of commissioning procedures and operating documentation.
  • Equipment selection, vendor coordination, estimating, and project execution.
  • Professional Engineer registration.

Work takes place at active construction sites, pipeline facilities, and industrial locations, including outdoor environments. The engineer must remain engaged in hands‑on field activities, follow customer safety requirements, and coordinate technical decisions with the personnel performing the work. Assignment duration and work schedules vary with project requirements.
