Job summary

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) National Security Project in New York, NY seeks a Staff Attorney or Senior Attorney for a two-year, hybrid role. You will handle strategic impact litigation and advocacy, reporting to the Project Director, and collaborate across departments and affiliates.

Required are a U.S. JD, NY Bar, and 2+ years in complex civil litigation with strong research and writing skills; a commitment to civil liberties and racial justice is essential.

Qualifications

• J.D. degree from a U.S. law school and NY bar membership.
• Minimum two years of complex civil litigation in federal courts.
• Experience with constitutional litigation and national security matters preferred; commitment to these issues essential.
• Excellent legal research and writing skills.
• Demonstrated ability to engage in complex legal analysis and fact investigation in impact litigation and policy advocacy settings.
• Ability to communicate legal concepts clearly and persuasively in writing and orally.

Responsibilities

• Conduct strategic impact litigation and advocacy for priority issues.
• Perform legal research, fact development, drafting pleadings and memoranda, and motions.
• Identify and develop new litigation and advocacy projects; analyze legislation for potential litigation.
• Engage in public education, coalitions, and policy work to advance project goals.
• Collaborate with staff across the organization and with state affiliates.
• Travel as required for litigation, conferences, and case strategy.
