Job summary

Checkr is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager for its Machine Learning Engineering team within the Data & ML organization in San Francisco. You will lead ML engineers across seniority levels, set technical direction, and own production outcomes, shaping AI strategy and measurable accuracy across core products.

The role emphasizes building scalable ML infrastructure, deploying models responsibly, and collaborating with Product, Security, Operations, and GTM teams to deliver trusted AI-powered

Qualifications

• 10+ years building software and machine learning or AI systems
• 3+ years managing ML or software engineers including hiring and developing senior and staff-level leaders
• Strong software-engineering foundation and track record shipping ML systems in production
• Depth across ML lifecycle: data labeling, experimentation, deployment, APIs, CI/CD, observability
• Sound judgment across ML, deep learning, LLMs, rules and software
• Experience setting direction for NLP, classification, extraction, entity resolution, risk or fraud
• Fluency with modern LLM systems, tools, agent orchestration, latency and cost trade-offs
• Proven ability translate ambiguous problems into sharp roadmaps and measurable outcomes
• Strong people leadership with delegation and coaching
• Executive-level communication and cross-functional influence

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow the ML Engineering team and set clear ownership
• Define strategy and multi-quarter ML roadmap prioritizing customer outcomes, revenue, accuracy, reliability
• Raise the production engineering bar with reliable APIs, tests, CI/CD, observability and on-call ownership
• Build the ML operating model including data provenance, model versioning and monitoring
• Advance core product intelligence in classification, extraction, and entity resolution
• Launch AI and fraud products partnering with Product, Security, Operations and GTM teams
• Lead Checkr’s agentic transition with governance across models and tools
• Operate as an executive partner explaining trade-offs to senior leadership
• Model AI-native leadership to improve speed, quality, and system design
