Job summary

The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine, seeks a Principal Scientific Software Engineer to shape machine learning and computer vision behind digital measures, mentor trainees, drive publications and model releases, and set technical direction across edge deployments and open-weight models.

You'll collaborate with behavioral experts, ensure robust MLOps, and help translate complex mouse behavior research into scalable software that supports neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorder

Qualifications

• Master's or PhD in computer science, machine learning, or a related field is preferred, with roughly ten years of experience building and shipping software.
• Proficiency with LLM-based coding assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code) to accelerate development while maintaining code quality.
• Production machine learning with PyTorch, training/evaluation infrastructure, model versioning, and deployment including edge inference optimizations.
• Data plumbing for large video at volume: object storage, containers, Kubernetes, SLURM, Go, Bash.
• Familiarity with Python, PyTorch, ffmpeg, C++, Cython, SQLite, PostgreSQL, Bash and cloud providers (GCP, AWS).
• Ability to balance priorities across scientific, engineering and deadlines; strong written and spoken communication.

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction for lab ML/CV models and deployment to edge hardware.
• Collaborate with behavioral experts to shape design of behavior indices.
• Lead publication and release of software; contribute to proposals and funding.
• Mentor lab members and provide technical leadership across the lab.
• Represent lab as senior technical voice inside JAX and externally.
