Job summary

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, MD, seeks a Senior Engineer & Analyst to lead the technical vision, architecture, and implementation of mission-centered, model-based capabilities that advance augmented human decision making across defense programs.

This role requires a master’s (or PhD) in a technical field, 7+ years of defense-domain experience, expertise in decision science, digital engineering, ML/AI, and strong systems engineering skills, with eligibility for a TS/SCI

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in engineering or related field.
  • 7+ years of defense-related experience, including work with operational users and in classified environments.
  • Expertise in decision science, digital engineering, statistical analysis, ML/AI.
  • Experience performing systems engineering for complex systems or systems-of-systems.
  • Familiar with mission engineering processes and translating needs into system capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply technical background to real-world engineering problems in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience leading mission engineering efforts spanning multiple disciplines.
  • Recognized technical authority with leadership skills to influence strategy and culture.
  • Strong verbal and written communication to explain complex concepts.
  • Willingness to travel to military facilities and obtain necessary clearances.

Responsibilities

  • Apply systems thinking and mission engineering to analyze operational concepts and design mission architectures.
  • Translate mission and user needs into actionable system and model requirements and solutions.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams developing modeling, simulation, and analytical methods and connecting architectures to analysis models (e.g., AFSIM).
  • Plan, execute, and analyze field tests, manage technical risks and debt, driving continuous improvement.
  • Document and present results to managers, sponsors, and technical forums, mentoring junior staff.
