Job summary

HRL Laboratories is seeking an experienced engineer to lead end-to-end IMU evaluation and characterization for prototype development and production readiness. The role emphasizes sensor performance, firmware alignment, and rigorous test execution.

You will define environmental and dynamic test strategies, analyze results, and push hardware/firmware improvements. Proficiency in MATLAB/Python and embedded C/C++ is required, with a strong emphasis on test automation and CI/CD practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelors, masters or Ph.D in a relevant field.
• 7+ years hands-on sensor development and DSP including prototype bring-up and hardware/firmware integration.
• 4+ years experience managing production and test documentation and artifact production.
• Strong understanding of inertial sensor performance and filtering/compensation algorithms.
• Experience with IMU test equipment and test automation interfaces.
• Proficiency with MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW or similar for data analysis and automation.
• Strong hardware fundamentals and interaction with embedded firmware.
• Proficiency in embedded C/C++ and at least one automation language (Python preferred).
• Knowledge of Git version control, CI/CD, code reviews, and testing practices.
• Working knowledge of microcontrollers/SoCs, ADCs/DACs, and serial interfaces (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, Ethernet).

Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end IMU evaluation and characterization tasks for prototyping, product development, and sustainment.
• Define and execute characterization strategies across environmental, dynamic, and operational conditions.
• Analyze performance data, identify drivers, and perform root-cause investigations of anomalies and firmware effects.
• Develop operational firmware to align sensor behavior, filtering, and calibration with system goals; support bring-up and debugging.
• Drive maturation of hardware/firmware, including debug, yield trends, and prototype improvements.
• Develop lab infrastructure and scripts for evaluation and validation; build automation in Python/ MATLAB/ Simulink.
• Lead system-level validation with test plans, pass/fail criteria, and robust test coverage.
• Ensure requirements flow down and provide documentation for transition to low-rate production.
• Maintain configuration control and support engineering change processes for early IMUs.
