Location & Work Model
Hybrid position based out of our Exton, PA office.
Responsibilities
- Design and analysis of mechanical systems, equipment, and packaging for FARO’s metrology products.
- Support projects from concept to production, coordinating with related departments and vendors.
- Act as subject matter expert in the design and tuning of servo control systems.
- Research and select motors, bearings, and sensors for precision axis design.
- Research and design power transmission mechanisms.
- Perform dynamic systems analysis and feasibility studies of designs and concepts using engineering principles and FEA software.
- Conduct hands‑on assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of prototypes to ensure design requirements are met.
- Develop assembly, calibration, and compensation techniques.
- Build BOMs for manufacturing and assembly.
- Guide operations with creation of assembly instructions.
- Understand cross‑functional technology and interfaces within the product line.
- Analyze and refine high‑level requirements.
- Mentor other engineers and review their designs and analysis.
- Lead the mechanical engineering of subsystems and act as subsystem project lead when required.
- Inform stakeholders and cross‑functional teams of new projects in a concise and professional way to secure commitment.
- Provide suggestions for product improvements at part and module level.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Preference for MS or PhD in Mechanical, Electrical or Robotics Engineering with advanced coursework in servo controls.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in machine design and servo control design and tuning (preferably over 10 years).
- Expert level understanding of servo control system design and tuning for complex linear and rotary systems.
- Experience in precision machine design and evaluation for metrology, machine tool, robotics or similar applications.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks CAD or similar to create models and drawings.
- Finite element analysis using SolidWorks Simulation or ANSYS.
- Drawing generation in accordance with ASME Y14.5M dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Design of kinematic components, motors, bearings, and system error budgets.
- Dynamic system modeling using MATLAB or similar software.
- Experience with programming languages such as Python or C#.
