Job summary

Johnson Service Group seeks a Senior Mechanical / Piping Design Engineer for a long-term contract in Birmingham, AL. The role emphasizes piping system sizing, stress analyses, valve selection, and adherence to ASME B31.1/B31.3 codes.

You will lead conceptual layouts, perform advanced analyses, and produce detailed drawings while mentoring junior engineers and coordinating EPC workflows. Per diem and strong OT compensation are noted in the listing.

Qualifications

• Requires BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering from ABET-accredited university.
• 7+ years of relevant industrial mechanical design experience.
• Experience in piping system sizing, stress analysis, and valve selection.
• Knowledge of ASME B31.1 and B31.3 piping codes and materials.
• Familiar with safety valves and devices for piping systems.
• Strong interdisciplinary coordination and EPC workflow understanding.
• Ability to mentor junior engineers; PE registration is highly preferred.
• Proficient with AutoCAD/Plant 3D and Navisworks; MS Office.

Responsibilities

• Develop conceptual layouts, cost studies, and preliminary designs.
• Apply advanced engineering methods to complex piping systems.
• Produce material take-off ready designs and estimates.
• Identify critical piping systems and perform ASME-compliant stress analyses.
• Develop piping material specifications and detailed drawings.
• Support drafting teams and review vendor drawings for mechanical input.
• Ensure designs are constructible, efficient, and meet client expectations.
• Contribute to scope development, procurement documentation, and equipment specs.
• Conduct field data collection and on-site verification.
