Job description

Senior Mechanical Engineer, Stage Propulsion

Long Beach, California

At Relativity Space, we have two audacious goals: to build the next great commercial launch company with Terran R and to become America's leading force in additive manufacturing innovation. This journey begins right here on Earth – where we design, build, and fly rockets to deliver customer payloads to orbit.

About the Team:

The Stage Fluids and Components team is responsible for all fluid systems and components on the Terran R launch vehicle. This includes systems for the liquid oxygen and liquid natural gas propellants as well as the supporting helium and nitrogen gases. We also design the individual valves that are used within these systems. This requires us to integrate our designs with those of the structures, propulsion, avionics hardware teams, and work closely with the GNC and performance teams to ensure that our systems can meet the requirements of launching and landing a reusable rocket.

About the Role:

In this role, you will be responsible for the mechanical and structural implementation of the stage fluid systems, ensuring a reliable and efficient operation of our Terran R launch vehicle.

  1. Fluids routing and design trade studies
  2. Fluid system hardware mechanical verification analysis including both hand calcs and FEA
  3. Structural design of mounting hardware for various fluid system components and routing
  4. Incorporate 3D printing methods in fluid system mechanical design
  5. Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)

The right person for this role will need to be someone who enjoys leading the way for the team on exploring new methods and design approaches. They will have end-to-end ownership of their designs and immediately see hardware you designed come to fruition. They must be flexible to changes in strategic direction and willing to take full ownership of their projects to ensure we are producing the best possible product while incorporating innovative production methods into their designs.

About You:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or an equivalent engineering discipline
  2. 5+ years mechanical design experience
  3. Experience with a commercial CAD package (NX, CREO, Solidworks)
  4. Experience with GD&T
  5. Manufacturing experience or experience interacting with vendors
  6. Experience with fluid system components (fittings, seals, valves, regulators, etc.) and system testing
  7. Experience with FEA tools to analyze structural margins

At Relativity Space, we are committed to transparency and fairness in our compensation practices. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors.

Hiring Range:

$138,000 - $178,000 USD

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company.
