Job summary

The National Robotics Engineering Center at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer to contribute to groundbreaking robotics systems. You will design, test, analyze, and lead electromechanical subsystems, while mentoring junior engineers and presenting results to sponsors.

Responsibilities include CAD modeling, prototyping, subsystem integration, and field-test support, with travel as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering with 6+ years of experience or MS with 3+ years.
  • Proven track record developing complex mechanical systems.
  • Technical writing experience and strong organizational skills.
  • Independent judgment and problem-solving abilities; strong communication.

Responsibilities

Job description

The National Robotics Engineering Center is seeking a dynamic Senior Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the design of groundbreaking robotics systems.

Responsibilities
  • Perform research, design, develop, and test electromechanical systems for robotic applications
  • Apply engineering design process from conceptualization to prototype development and validation
  • Perform modeling, analysis, and simulation of electromechanical systems
  • Lead design efforts for electromechanical subsystems
  • Support junior engineers
  • Develop CAD models and drawings of electromechanical assemblies and systems
  • Perform light fabrication, subsystem assembly, and integration of subsystems
  • Formulate and perform electromechanical system tests
  • Document analyses, design, and build test reports
  • Travel to support field experiments and off-site test programs
  • Develop and make presentations to sponsors and other interested parties
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and more than 6 years’ experience OR MS in Mechanical Engineering and 3+ years’ experience Proven track record in developing complex mechanical systems Technical writing experience Effective organizational, planning, project management, public speaking and analytical skills required Independent judgment and problem-solving abilities 3D modeling experience required (SolidWorks preferred)
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis with ANSYS and/or SolidWorks Simulation Experience with manufacturing using modern methods including CNC mill and lathe, CNC press brakes, laser cutters, and 3D printers Gear design experience Hydraulic system design experience Experience with structural design and analysis Experience specifying/selecting electrical components (motors, sensors, etc.) for robotic systems Knowledge of electrical circuit design Experience with programming for prototype development (Python, Arduino, etc.) Knowledge technical project management and systems engineering
