Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join the Mission Critical team in Chicago. The role focuses on designing mechanical systems for mission-critical data center projects and advising clients on compliant, safe, and efficient solutions.

Occasional travel is required as part of a dynamic, multi-disciplinary environment. The position offers exposure to large-scale EPC-style projects, opportunities to lead discipline design, and potential to advance toward project

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field from ABET accredited program is required.
  • FE exam completion with 7+ years of mechanical engineering experience is required.
  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering with 6+ years of experience is required.
  • PE license is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical systems/equipment for safe, productive workplaces.
  • Advise clients on mechanical system options to meet needs and codes.
  • Monitor installation to ensure compliance with design specs and safety codes.
  • Develop design criteria for air and water side building mechanical systems.
  • Review equipment and system designs and specifications.
  • Develop concept studies and design.
  • Opportunity to develop project management skills.
  • Assist project managers with day-to-day management of execution, deliverables, quality, schedule, contracts, and client interface.
  • Handle contract administration for RFIs, submittals, change management and claims mitigation.
  • Support project reporting on status, risks, schedule, and cost.
  • Enforce established standards and practices.

Specific areas of responsibility include the following:

  • Designing mechanical systems/equipment to provide for a useful and safe workplace.

  • Advise clients regarding mechanical systems/requirements available to meet their needs and comply with safety codes.

  • Monitor installation of designed equipment/systems to ensure compliance with design specifications and safety codes.

  • Participate in developing the design criteria for air and water side of building mechanical systems.

  • Reviews mechanical designs and specifications of equipment or systems being purchased or fabricated.

  • Developing concept studies and design.

  • Additional opportunity exists to develop project management skills.

  • Assist project managers with day-to-day management of project execution, deliverables, quality, schedule, contracts, subcontracts, proposals, and client interface.

  • Facilitate and execute contract administration responsibility for RFIs, submittals, change management and claim mitigation.

  • Assist in project reporting status, risks, schedule and cost.

  • Enforces standards and practices.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program, and 7 years mechanical engineering experience required.

  • Or bachelor's degree in mechanical or related engineering technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 7 years mechanical engineering experience required.

  • Or master's degree in mechanical engineering and 6 years mechanical engineering experience required.

  • EPC project experience preferred.

  • Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical equipment design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, PIP, NACE). Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members.

  • Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.

  • Ability to travel.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.

Compensation

$140,000.00-210,000.00 Yearly

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
