Job summary

AbbVie’s peptide discovery team in Madison, WI seeks a creative Mechanical Engineer to own the lifecycle of advanced instrumentation used in peptide array synthesis. You will design, integrate, and test hardware such as pumps, sensors, and stages, collaborating with R&D scientists and software engineers to accelerate pharmaceuticals discovery and improve patient outcomes.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) with extensive instrumentation experience.
• 2+ years creating instrumentation for lab/scientific/medical apps.
• Proficiency with SolidWorks for models, drawings, assemblies.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
• Proficiency in Python or MATLAB.
• Strong understanding of fabrication for precision instrument hardware.
• Solid grasp of applied math, physics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, integrate, and test instrumentation components such as pumps, vision systems, and high-precision stages.
• Lead mechanical design and analysis across project phases with software/ops teams.
• Diagnose instrumentation issues during prototyping, production, and operations.
• Develop and oversee testing of design concepts or models to validate functionality.
• Acquire, integrate, and analyze system data to ensure hardware reliability.
• Create 2D/3D CAD concepts, layouts, drawings, and documentation with GD&T.
• Interact with suppliers to select components meeting project requirements.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to improve complex systems.
